Default Monster Cables

What are your guys thoughts on Monster Cables?

If we forget about the price....Given that they are a digital signal sent in binary, so its either a 1 or a 0, are they any better than standard cables over SHORT distances?

Would be interested to get your thoughts on this.

I'll give you both answers in short.

Yes, they make a difference if your kit is good enough.

No, they don't make any difference, it's all snake oil.

I'm in the former camp and in all honesty, I'd rather spend money on Scorpion cables than Monster cables as I think Paul's advertising overheads are lower

Paul is a forum member who just happens to make excellent cables at very good prices.

Although I am not convinced that differences are audible in the majority of systems... it is a myth about the whole 1's and 0's thing. It is still an electrical (or optical actually) signal, where there is no such thing as 1's and 0's, its still a signal that is processed into 1's and 0's at the receiving end and things can affect that signal which means the 1's and 0's at one end aren't always the same as the sending end.

As you quite rightly state, digital cables don't actually carry digital information as such, in the case of USB for example, they merely carry a representation of it known as Non-return-to-zero, inverted (NRZI) encoding. See wiki page

Also, concerning electrical digital cables specifically - they don't carry ones and zeros as people tend to think, but increases and decreases in voltage only. The cable has to be fast enough so that a proper representation of the digital data can be then re-constructed.

Therefore a well made cable, tested for these speeds, should be worth the expense to some degree... but perhaps not to the cost of some really expensive cables.
