i wanted to buy an av receiver my eye has been on the sony strde 485. but the sales man said tha the eltax avr200 would be a better buy still to me the sony is better. But then a third receiver. it had caught my eye again the Marantz SR4200 or one more the Sherwood RD6106R the last two are only ten pounds more then the eltax and the sony. could some one point out the better receiver
Your idea of best receiver will be different to mine. You haven't really given any info..what kit your going to hook up to it and what you're going to use it for. Even when you give that info the best you can expect is a short list of two/three receivers for you to try and decide which one suites you. You may get someone raving about one particular piece of kit but that will be because it sounds good to them. They might like chocolate but you may not :D~:-D~
I think the best advice I can give you is to take a load of cd's and dvd's to the shop and listen to see which you like best. Denon make pretty good receivers.

at the moment i am on a budget for a receiver once i buy the receiver i'll pick it up from there the ones's i pointed out. i can get for £200 and under so in general who would be better to go for. I do have a sub but i have not heard it yet. the sub is a sony sa-wms5 but people say it's not all that so i looking at building a sub and maybe buying some speakers. i am not looking for a big setup for startoff but i want a receiver general good allrounder not just one sided

I suggest that you buy either second hand, from this or another Forum, or ex-demo from a dealer. That way your £200 gets much better value. Personally, I first bought the Denon AVR1602, for £200 from a dealer in a clearance sale, and that had/has 5.1 dolby digital and ProLogic2 which a good entry level. I later bought the Denon AVR2802 second hand for £300, which is a good upgrade.
There must be good prices for the Mara 4200 as well. Also look for Yamaha 630.

i can get the Marantz SR4200 for £129 which is not a bad price but looks like i better go for better receivers is there a need for prologic 2. I have looked in to prologic but is there a big diffence between both of the prologic's also i was wondering i have been looking at cables now what the diffence between a 2 phono plugs and a rca cable is one gold plate and the other not or is there a diffence like freq involed

I believe the Mara 4200 does have PL2, and agree that £129 is a good price: so you have your entry level AV receiver.
To enjoy the benefits of 5.1 from a DVD player you need:
What do you have so far?
Good advice that. 2nd hand is the way to go.
Basically speaking, Prologic 2 tries to make Dolby digital out of a sterio signal (i.e. sterio rear speakers). Prologic goes for a mono rear pair. So there is a big difference.
What about a Denon 1803?

Best to go for a listen. I'd spend as much money as you possibly can. You'll end up upgrading and wasting more money otherwise. As my mrs :D~:-D~
