I have had a PC for many years, but I have become increasingly upset with the amount of software NOT being made for the PC, e.g Star Wars epIII,TT Superbikes etc etc etc
Now I know you're all going to say wait until christmas and get the XBOX 360, but I would like to get a console very soon, hence the question in the title.
I have looked at the software available for both of these consoles, and it seems that the PS2 has the greater amount and a better variety(it's not just for my use,it's for my wife to use as well).

Xbox, Hi-Def Modified, nuff said
I have both and would say if your going to be using it for online gaming go for an Xbox it has a much better online system. Like being able to tell who on your friends list is playing what and being able to send invites across games.
I do love my ps2 but play the Xbox a lot more it generally has the better graphics and always has Dolby Digital sound tracks where as on the Ps2 the only game ive come across with a DTS sound track was Vice City all the rest are stereo.
Going by your setup Montana I would have to say the Xbox would be your better option. As already mentioned you can get Progressive Scan and High Definition with your Xbox and also 5.1 sound when gaming which PS2 does not support.
Although PS2 supports Progressive Scan on some games, almost all games on the Xbox support this feature and if you have a Native Pro-Scan display unit you will benefit from this greatly.
As far as games go the PS2 still provides more games in quantity, more gameplay varieties and still outsells Xbox software hands down in the world market.
So if your more interested in what games you can play rather then how they will look and sound then you may prefer the PS2.
At the end of the day though I say do what I did and just get both lol. Problem solved!

The honest answer is to look at the catalogue of titles available for each console, and judge which has the most games that suit the tastes of yourself and your wife. 5.1, HD, progressive scan support... it's all very nice yes, but ultimately all that should come distant second to the desire of wanting a truly great game that appeals to you.
I like the Xbox a great deal (once you modify it), but when it comes to the want of genuine variety I get more use out of my Gamecube and PS2 for some highly unique titles. So much of it depends on where your tastes settle really. What type of computer games do you and your wife like playing?
I'd almost suggest you consider a slimline PS2, after which if you've really taken to console gaming you could consider an Xbox 360 later on down the line once the cost of the advanced £280 bundle has seen a price drop or two - since with the higher spec 360 you'll have the hard disc that allows you to enjoy existing xbox titles.

I agree it is down to personal preference and which games you enjoy. I play more games which are available on PS2 compared to Xbox.
But also think if you going to play online the Xbox is a better option.
Both consoles are so cheap at the moment, check on eBay and if you don't mind second hand you could probably get both for less than £100.
