ok guys, i'm thinking of building a custom AV unit. Something similar to the Ikea Oppli, but I want each compartment made for each individual component in my system. I have looked at many TV stands, racks etc, but my system is too big and awkward for any of them really. The main reason is that my centre speaker has to fit into the unit.

Anyway, I need to know the most suitable type of wood for the job. I was thinking MDF, but its gonna need to be thick stuff. Are there any other materials out there which would be more suitable for hifi kit? As long as its solid and will take plenty of weight, thats all I need really.

Also, my plan is to cover it with leather - Want it looking nice in my front room. Can any of you recommend anywhere cheap to buy good quality materials like this?

Also, feel free to give any advice/tips for the job

Thanks!

there are a few different materials available for making a solid stand, MDF in 18mm sheets is good, or you can get a composite board with some kind of cement in the center, mucho cashos though that one. Try a supplier like Jewsons, or WE Edens, they will deliver for a small fee.

Fabric covering is a tough one, best to try Interface fabrics to start with, they do a good range, if not try C&H Fabrics!

We can now get material to make furniture with that is Absorbing! Very cool, if people like that sort of thing that is..thinking about some uses at the moment.....

hi, thanks for the quick reply! I'll check out those companies. I think MDF should be strong enough, I wonder if you can get thicker than 18mm? I suppose it'll get expensive.

Cheers

you can get 20 and 25mm i think, i do recall doing some in silly thicknesses before, you can also get a MDF chipboard sandwich which is light but strong

yeah, we use 12mm normally, but have been known to use the thicker stuff

would you be interested in making something for me? I've never done anything like this before, and am probably better off having something made professionaly. If you are interested, please give details on how to go about it.

Thanks.
