Having thought long and hard, I have decided to take a big step and upgrade to a pre/power amp combination. Problem is, the whole thing confuses the hell out of me :?~:-?~:???:

I need to look at second hand kit due to budget restrictions, but I have no knowledge of these products :(

I have been told that a good starting point would be a Rotel power amp and a Rotel or Tag processor. My budget will be £2,000 max and I would hope to be able to get any cables etc with this amount.

I would appreciate any suggestions as to what I should be looking out for, bearing in mind I am a complete novice with these devices. Any alternatives to the above makes or recommended model numbers would be appreciated.

I am hoping to gather enough information to be able to buy with confidence.

Cheers

You might be able to get a Tag for a very good price if you look about.. but to fit in with that budget it would have to be a fairly basic model.

I'm in a similar position mate, looking out for a suitable pre/processor to replace my Yamaha DSPE800, having bought the power amps.

Had a look around the shops yesterday in Leicester and there is very little suitable for a sensible price - it looks like the Rotel is the only reasonable offering. Otherwise you're looking at nearer £3k for the processor alone!

Saw a s/h Linn 5103, but that was still £1650.

Would appreciate too if anyone else could recommend any processors at nearer the £1000 mark.

At that sort of price you're looking at Rotel or Cyrus AV8 new, or a second hand Meridian 565 or Lexicon DC2. If you stretch to £1500 or a little less for the processor that might buy you a second hand Lexicon MC1, or Tag AV32R.
