Went to the Xbox 360 tour in Birmingham yesterday, and thought Avt could do with someone giving their 2 pence worth..

As you'd expect from microsoft, nice big room, nicely branded, DJ, white leeather sofa's about 50 xbox 360's around.

turn up, get a wrist band for free entry to the next 30 min session. only about 30 odd people in on a sun afternoon, so easy to play any and every thing.

360's plugged in samsung 26" lcd's i think.

each game has a sign above it saying how completed.

Kameo, nice and colourful, faily fast, reminded me of link and legend of zelda, interesting characters, cut scenes, and similar controls.

call of duty 2. good graphics, I guess, not mind blowing. seemed to have lots of things to it, not sure it's my fav FPS though.

Gun, a cowboy one, road around on a horse a bit, controls a bit confusing, landscape and background graphics a bit dull, perhaps not finished yet.

condemned, looks nice and eerie, quite claustraphobic, although perhaps somewhat slow.

king kong - big, nice looking graphics, cut scenes looked a bit ropey. not great controls of movement.

PGR3 - nice backgrounds, dead fast, controls okay, but the car(ferrari) looked appalling ? how did that work?

perfect dark zero - nice grpahics, lots in it, played twoplayer, where the other follows another route though the level, slow though, not a fast game unfortunately.

need for speed, backgrounds okay, car models looked good, better than pgr3, but not as fast a game - perhaps because it was a golf rather than ferrari.

xbox 360 controller, wasn't blown away by it, but that is probably because they are stuck on metal stalkes, that stop you really holding it.

good event, but they don't really seem to be targetting the kiddie market.

wasn't blown away by any game unfortunately. all of the above would be good to play/own, but couldn't tell which is best.

any other views?

So how would you say the 360 compared to the current XBOX? Is it a significant enough step up?

a step up, yes. Significant, no.

but then I thought n64 to dreamcast was.

dreamcast to PS2, wasn't.

ps2 to xbox wasn't.

so, in the scheme of things, I'm happy I have a pre-order in.

I agree a lot of the steps in performance have been quite small, especially when you stick the old dreamcast in there. I was very disapointed when I first got a PS2 after having owned a Dreamcast since it's launch.

Would back up Bonesy's comments on the games themselves. As a non-Xbox owner my take on it was that none of the games I saw struck me as being the 'killer app' that would make me rush out to order/buy the console just so I could play the game.

The one that did stand out for me was Need For Speed. I would also like to see more of Condemned (which hopefully picks up from the parts we saw) and Kameo, which does look extremely interesting and very polished. Peter Jackson's King Kong did have some stunning graphics.

What impressed me most was the image quality (unless you'd brought headphones you couldn't hear any of the games). Even on a 26" LCD a foot in front of your nose the image looked absolutely pristine and razor-sharp.

The event itself was OK, but a bit drab maybe. As Bonesy said, they're still very much in the 30+ year old male market. There were some little kids in there but they were being kicked off the over 16s only games and didn't seem to respond well the the jazz-fusion DJ set that was playing, far to loudly, non-stop. I think we saw one girl in there who I have a feeling was a plant, again for the 30+ male market. Or do slim, attractive, long blonde haired young girls often go out on their own to play Xbox all day long?

From a personal point of view I've always been a Nintendo person but much like I viewed the Dreamcast at the time that was launched, I think the Xbox 360 will be a 'must own' for most people. I'll be picking mine up after Christmas and the first price drop - not because I'm tight but because what I've seen so far does not inspire me to own it right away.

Although as it's likely that the games I've seen so far will end up being the worst on the platform, things do look promising for the future.

Yes, it was there... nobody was playing it (3 machines running) so no idea what it was like.

The football game seemed the most popular on the day. No idea what it's called but it looked lovely... until the cutaway shots of the players' faces - when it all went badly wrong.

No it didn't, thats what they all look like.. Peter Beardsley! Who's face was actually modelled on a bad CGI image...

yeah, dead or alive was there, and yes, I should have had a look.

but, it was like kids in a candy shop....

games, consoles, and a fit blond... almost heaven, but there was no alcohol and not enough time ! and acid jazz funk fusion :(

from the cursory glance I gave DOA it looked good, but you know me and fighting games.

No ghost recon, which is the only one I wanted to see :(

acid jazz funk fusion :(

That music really was annoying. Given that it was a nice sunny weekend and that most of the target audience would have spent the previous night clubbing and were probably looking to spend the coming evening clubbing they could have played more appropriate music, something a bit harder and more cutting edge.

To add your Bonesy's comments about the controller, it reminded me of the Dreamcast controller but I found it (and the game controls) very unintuative when picking up to play Perfect Dark Zero, it seemed to do everything the opposite way to which I expected.
