View Full Version : Can someone help with a receiver question?

Hi, I have an Acoustic Solutions DS 533 (Pro Logic/Dolby Digital) and the Amp/Receiver has a built-in subwoofer.
I was thinking of buying a new Pro Logic II receiver as an upgrade, since the Nintendo GameCube uses Pro Logic II as opposed to Pro Logic, and I would like to know if there is any way of connecting my existing setup to a new receiver, instead of just taking the speakers from the old one and connecting them to a new receiver (since that would mean having to buy a new subwoofer!).
Is this possible? Is there any way to convert the Pro Logic signal into Pro Logic II, or am I just thinking ahead? Thanks for reading!

Having just read the specs, I don't think it's possible to use your existing Sub as a standalone unit with an external Amp/Receiver. These all-in-one Speaker/Amp Packages are convenient and value for money for some but don't have much in the way of upgrade potential I'm afraid. You can offcourse use your existing speakers with a new Receiver, but as you say a new Sub will be required.

As you can see from my other post, I will go for the very cheapest PLII receiver there is, in fact, any cheap means at all of getting PLII.

Hi, well seeing as this is my first post then I'll give you my experience of Acoustic Solutions.
I was a newbie to all this home cinema malarky until the beginning of the year.
One of my friends had just purchased the 533 model also and invited me around to have a listen.
My initial reaction was 'not bad for £100' - subwoofer with the built in amp, remote control etc... it looked quite neat.
So, without any research, I went off to Argos and purchased the same kit!!! What a mistake that turned out to be!!!
It's the old addage I'm afraid, you get what you pay for.
I binned the out of the box cables and spent as much on new ones as I did purchasing the kit in the first place.
The problem may seem miniscule, but never the less it was still annoying me. Namely the audible hum that was coming from all the speakers.
I tried the kit on a different TV in the house and even at the in laws house too. Still the same.
Needless to say I returned the kit to Argos and got a full refund.
And needless to say that I learnt from the experience and have spent the time since reading up as much as I can, asking around, reading newsgroups on the net etc etc before deciding to make my purchase.
I am now the proud owner of a Pionner VSX C301s AV receiver and the latest KEF speakers - KHT1005 x5 satellites plus subwoofer and associated cables.

Hi, On the subject of acoustic solutions. I purchased the DS 333 subwoofer and 5 speakers 18 months ago. The other night it let out a terrific squeal from the speakers (i was`nt even playing a dvd) and gave up the ghost. Contacted A.C. informing them that i thought 18 months was not very long (hardly ever used the bloom`in thing) but they were not interested. I also asked them why within those 18 months they had already brought out a DS333MK11 once again just a muffled response in the "tough" attitude. Suffice to say i told him i would never purchase anything with there name on it. So well done mate i think you done the right thing returning yours.
