Not sure if you've seen this:-
March 6, 2006 - In a move that will likely benefit consumers and annoy some big business peeps, it appears that LG plans to hedge its bets in the forthcoming next-gen DVD format war.
In an internal memo leaked to the press, VP Bob Perry states that LG plans to launch a dual-format HD-DVD/Blu-ray player in the late summer or early fall. Citing uncertainty as to which format will emerge victorious; Perry goes on to say that LG's first Blu-ray player, the BD199, has been cancelled.
This news places LG out of the Blu-ray camp and absent for the format's looming launch in May. Whereas other manufacturers had previously gone on record that dual-format players were going to be impossible to produce due to licensing issues, it appears as though LG has engineered some sort of solution.
Is this a sign of things to come? Will the format war be called a truce before the battle really begins? Will other manufacturers develop similar solutions? Only time will tell, but you can count on us to keep you up to date.
