Maybe SG can find a thread, but I can't believe we have a console gaming forum and no MAME/other emus thread.

Obvious AVT rules apply (no discussion of where to obtain ROMs from etc.) but has anyone (else) been revisiting their childhood, only on a big screen?

Tried to get a Snes emu working full screen on my TV from my laptop at the weekend. No Joy though, the screen would just go dark.

Apart from that (when i get it working). I want to sort out an Amiga 500 emu and one for the Atari 2600.

Yep, as much as I can..!

And as you say, you absolutely have to hook the computer up to a CRT to get the correct effect. Older games just don't look right on any other kind of display.

I really wish Sony would have included AV-out on the PSP too - if you're able to run homebrew there are tons of great emulators available for that. It's obviously good to have your games with you on the go, but it'd be very nice to make use of a TV when you're near one.

Nothing beats the real thing, though. Plugging - for instance - a brand new, freshly-acquired-from-ebay cart into a real Atari 2600 and powering it up is an absolute joy. Albeit usually a short-lived one, before the nostalgia fades and you remember yet again, just as you did last time, that most of it's library has aged really, really badly, and you go back to the few really good games you already own. :D~:-D~

The only other thing you'll need is a lot more free time!

Are there any emulators that work on the PSP without having to mess about with the system firmware? Like one that will run from a memory stick? Just got a PSP and not up to speed on what you canb do with them yet.

You need to 'downgrade' the PSP firmare to version 1.5 to get emulators working. It is impossible to run homebrew (including emulators) on version 2.6, 2.61, 2.7, or 2.8 of the PSP firmware. Currently new PSPs are shipping with version 2.6 although 2.8 is available online. It is possible to downgrade v2.6 to 1.5 although it is pretty risky. I know someone who tried it and his PSP was almost ruined  For the sake of playing a few old games, and 10 minutes of fun before you get bored of retro games, it just isn't worth the risk. You could destroy your PSP forever if you don't do it properly

How would a person do that then Lench? That would solve a lot of my problems in life...

I came across an emulator called ScummVM last week which runs on Windows, as well as OSX and Linux and allows you to play the old Lucasarts type PC adventure games.

Spent a very pleasant couple of hours at the weekend reliving "Day of the Tentacle" on my Powerbook 8)~8-)~
