Emerging HD format works using enhanced red-laser tech: HD VMD

HdvmdI've filed this under Blu-ray/HD DVD though in fact this story is about a format that claims to rival the two new blue-laser HD disc formats using existing red-laser technology.

I've only just discovered that HD VMD (High Definition Versatile Multilayer Disc) is being pushed as a serious competitor to the two blues by New Medium Enterprises with James Cardwell, former president of Warner Home Video, as media and content advisor.

Yahoo News reports:

The new VMD platform uses a multilayering technology to create multiple layers and much greater storage within the thickness of a standard optical disc. It uses the existing red laser platform, which DVD uses. This makes VMD extremely attractive to content vendors, disc replicators and consumer electronics manufacturers, as little retooling is required for mass production. Benefits to the consumer will be VMD's true HD viewing quality, affordability, proven technology and compatibility with their existing DVD collections.

"As NME enters the HD marketplace, having James on the board ensures that NME will become a major force in the HD entertainment systems market place,'' said Mahesh Jayanarayan, the NME CEO. "I look forward to working with Jim and his talents and experience will enable NME to establish a strong market presence."The technology won't be identical to that used in producing regular DVDs, but presumably it's a lot closer to that to make it attractive to existing coontent producers.

This intrigues me. As if it's not complicated enough already with two formats fighting for supremacy in the HD content world, along comes a third using different technology and expects to join in.

How far it will go is another matter. There certainly seems to be some clout behind HD VMD, but I wonder if it's arriving too late in the day.

Content producers have already invested in Blu-ray and/or HD DVD production plants and equipment. Consumer playback devices for the blue-laser formats are coming (albeit slowly). This new technology is also going to require new playback equipment, so the consumer could potentially have a choice of three formats. That's just crazy.

On paper this sounds like a good technology, but that's not enough. It needs market penetration and significant content. It needs to win over content producers and consumers. High-definition content can sit on anything with enough capacity, but for the sake of the viewer it would be best to arrive at one unified format. A third format entering the arena really doesn't help this.

What do you think?

Isn't this one of the three Chinese HD formats tht are largely dead or stagnated now? Isn't the current proposal HD DVD with AVS for China?
