toughened glass is a safe option if you have kids,if you get laminate glass (i personaly wouldnt if you have kids)then make sure that the edges have been sanded down if they are going to be seen, the problem with lam is that the most common is 6.4 and it tends to crack easy, with toughened glass the edges are the weakest part
thickness go for 6mm,8mm or 10mm the bigger the size the thicker the glass tho i have seen 20+ stone in weight standing on 4mm toughened 2foot in the air and not breaking, pollishing is gonna cost but if you cant get pollished glass then get it arrised ask them to do the best they can, then when u get it home rub some wd40 etc down the arrised edge people will think it has been pollished
as for price find a local manufacturer of toughened glass find out if they work shifts and then go around when the bosses have gone home, ask one of the boys and im sure they will sort you out
sad how i know so much about glass but then it is my job :(
