View Full Version : DVE HD HD-DVD

My copy arrived today, so that's my evening sorted :)~:-)~ .
I hadn't realised but it's a combo disc so I finally have an NTSC DVE as well.
In some ways I'm just as interested in the sound levels as the picture, because I've never quite been sure that the levels sound correct from my HDDVD spinner.

Well, if you hated the navigation in the original DVE, you'll be pleased to know that it's a lot easier and simpler in the HD-DVD version. All the main setup patterns are present and correct and many come in 1080 and 720 form. The resolution/overscan patterns are particularly interesting for comparison.
Some of the tests with HF information will show you that HD is very much not a guarantee of artifact-free viewing although on the flip side they do show just how much detail you can get in an HD picture even when enough filtering to remove HF artifacts is applied. Don't go near the "Continuous Resolution, Horizontal, Luminance" pattern if you suffer from epilepsy or motion sickness it's very nausea inducing. images/smiley_icons/icon_dead.gif
Sound is, perhaps, slightly disappointing. There sound tests are only in Dolby(r) TrueHD so there's no possibility of checking whether other sound formats are decoded any differently.

Yeah I got my disc yesterday, but came away with exactly the same picture settings as I already had from using the SD version of the disc.
In the audio section, am I right in thinking the main speakers output at 75db and the LFE at 85db on this disc, as my previous level settings (from Avia) result in those figures from the TrueHD tones?
My main complaint with the disc is the amount of time taken for a chapter skip (at least five seconds). In the audio tests I would often want to skip back to a given speaker and test again after an adjustment, but not with the response times I have experienced so far.
