Is the new Battlestar Galactica mini-series showing in the UK yet?

It's currently on Sci-Fi in the US, and is actually quite a bit better than I was expecting. The story isn't anything to write home about but it looks very nice, the acting is solid and the effects are very good indeed for such a relatively low TV budget. (Except for their over-use of crash zooms on their cameras, not every single shot needs one of those...) Edward James Olmos as the new captain is very good, although I do keep expecting Crockett and Tubbs to wander in at any moment.

A very attractive new Cylon or two in there as well, you will know what I mean when you see it. ;)~;-)~

Well, it's not spectacular, but there are far worse things on the telly.

I'm just a sucker for those big space battles.

:D~:-D~

I have the disc and 4 a tenner its OK although there's no real extra's other than and short doc (The Lowdown) that was on sky at the same time it was on.

Its an interesting take on the original series and if watched without overly comparing it 2 the original it's fairly good!! Obviously it's far more P.C than the orig.

Soundtrack wise I was somewhat disappointed expected a lot more use of the surrounds but it was mostly front and a few LFE's!! I will say I wasn't listening 2 it at any great volume as I was mainly watching it late at night when the missus had gone 2 bed.

cheers

I've just watched this and thought it was very good compared to a lot of made for TV Sci-fi. The new 'look' space battles gets my vote of support!

It has also been confirmed that they are making this into a series according tot the ScFi.com web site.

I caught this on TV in the States (well, most of it), and was really impressed. I thought it was a very interesting, well-developed, mature, and quite powerful show. Very well filmed, too. The space battle scenes are real class - where Star Wars had WWI-style space battles, this has much more WWII-style, and it works really well, with awesome wide-angle "documentary"-style shots of swooping fighters and tracer fire - very cool!

It's surprisingly dark and gritty, which is why I liked it. It's not at all a "good guys win" happy-ending sort of story (though I don't really want to say more as it would spoil some plot points...) I think it would make a fantastic mini-series if they do continue it. For a tenner it's a steal.

Well I've just seen the new mini-series and the first series of Battlestar Gallactica on DVD. All I can say is that it's excellent and I can't wait for season 2 later this year/next year. I vaguely remember the original series from when I was a kid and I quite enjoyed it but this new series has taken it to a whole new level! I especially love how it's nothing like the Star Trek universe having a gritty realism with intriguing and flawed characters. The special-effects especially of the mini-series (which in my opinion were slightly better than the actual series) are fantastic for a television series. I don't want to jinx it but if Battlestar Gallactica can keep the quality up this potentially could become one of the best TV sci-fi series ever.

Fantastic show

The Mini series from 2003 is the weakest part of the story in my opinion.

It only picks up in the second part, after this however the first season, which starts almost straight on from the mini, really picks up the pace

I like all of it.

Season 2 has a 20 episode run. It is split into 2 parts of 10 eps per part.

The first part of the season comes to an end in 2 fridays time, I think the 26th of sep. This will be the first part of a cliff hanger episode called "Pegasus"

The second part of the season will not be shown in the states untill Jan 2006.

Sky one will be showing season 2 in jan 2006 as well, but will not be having a break halfway through the season. I think its being put on in jan over hear to fill the spot left by the now cancelled Enterprise.

It won't be a problem at all. The mini series pays homage to the original series but it's all new.

I thought the mini series was stunning. It was judged perfectly in terms of moving things on and praising the original. Better than any other remake I can think of in fact. I'm afraid the first series left me a bit cold though. Until the last 2 episodes, I thought it was fairly boring and very trite.

The plot is brilliant but the way it is being trickled in during each episode is fairly frustrating. I just want them to get on with it a bit faster. Was it commissioned for several series right from the get go?

I don't think so, at least i can recall newswire stories of the second and third seasons being confirmed by the SciFi channel as time has gone on. The third season continues to impress, although i take your point about the drip feed on the plot development.

Although the picture is so heavily treated in post production it's hard to judge accurately season 3 looks very nice on SKY ONE HD. I thought the first episode was 'slow' but very interesting. They keep dealing with some quite heavy subject matters in a main stream Sci-Fi series, which is very welcome.

Squirrelecto

I watched Season 1 and 2 recently.

Found Season 1 a bit frustrating as I could see what potential it had to be utterly amazing. It had great characters, lots of funky ideas, humour, a kicking score, solid special FX (the Cylons just look so damn cool and the space battles are just sublime)... but it just wasn't gelling together as well as it should have, so overall I came away with a feeling of it being just 'very good' rather than 'amazing' or 'oustanding'. I enjoyed watching it, but I never got that "I must watch just one more episode" vibe.

http://www.btinternet.com/~squirrelecto/stars/6stars.png

Season 2 was a different matter entirely. It got so good that was in 8/10 territory. Only problem was that we had a sequence of 3 weak episodes in the second half of the season ('Black Market', 'Scar', and 'Sacrifice') which killed the momentum for me.

http://www.btinternet.com/~squirrelecto/stars/7stars.png

I'm really looking forward to Season 3, which rumour has it will hit R1 in August, and have a mass of theories running around in my head, which is a sign of a great show.

I read that Season 4 will be the last season but I understand that the show has always had a very clear beginning, middle and end, so an extra season would be filler apparently. We'll see.

This has been driving me crazy as well. I love the opening sequence apart from this bit. It actually ruined one episode for me in Season 1 so I started looking away since then.

I think I am also the only person who preferred the original US theme from Season 1 rather than the international theme that they have replaced it within in Season 2.

Nice to see Apollo from the original series (Richard Hatch) having a little role too. I noticed one episode where they used the original theme in a scene as well.

Almost finished series 3. 3 episodes to go but I'm really losing the will to live.

For me they've broken the 1st commandment of entertainment: Dont be boring.

The major plot: Galactica and co are trying to find Earth whilst being chased by the Cylons.

The sub plot: Baltar and No.6

Everything else: Sub-sub plots.

How much time is spent on the major plot line? about 20 mins.

How much time is spent on the sub plot? 10 mins?

About 20 episodes take up the completely boring sub-sub plots. Do we need 3 weeks of Apollo fancies Starbuck? If people want to watch marriage breakdowns and adulterous affairs they can watch Eastenders can't they? I dont watch BSG for that!

Everything that's supposed to be so meaningful is really skimmed over...this week is racism...sorted in 40mins. Next week see the class system fixed in 40mins. Except nothing ever really is nicely resolved.

The rest is so predictable, mainly because you know none of the major characters are going to be killed off. Oh, Chief is stuck in a room with no air, will he make it? (yawn), Oh, is the President going to be executed (yawn). Is Baltar going to hang himself (what shall I do later). Is Starbuck dead? (what time shall i go to bed).

And as for the whole Presidential thing, it just feels more and more stupid.

Does Merthyr Tydfil need a President? Does it need a Governor? Does it even need a Government to survive? No. I think a locally elected council will suffice made up of working people yet we have 10'000 more people here than are in the whole human race in BSG, where a President sits at her desk all day trying to sort out 'big' issues. yeah, OK.

I think I'll try and make it though the next 3 episodes but then that's it. There's a lot more interesting series out there to take my time.

Chris morse
25-11-2008, 07:23 AM
I finished it last night. There was only 2 episodes to go, not 3, The Story So Far was a feature not an episode.

Anyway, how did they end this cliffhanging 2 part filane? A huge space battle? A fight for survival? Capturing something important?

No. A courtroom drama. yes, 2 weeks of Baltar being tried.

But, wait a minute, some of the people are hearing strange sitar music of Jimi Hendrix?

And then!!!!
