Karl.

Jase is 100% correct.

Remember, that the Denon uses RCA's for outputs.

Not all Active monitors use RCA. XLR is the common connector in the pro audio sector.

TRS is common too. Custom leads may need to be used to get connectivity.

This is one of those "you could, but why would you want to?" questions. You could buy a Cyrus or Rotel stand-alone processor for the same money, and achieve the same thing, and it would sound better.

I'd have a read up about Cyrus and their lack of bass management for DTS if I were you. Here:

Not heard one myself though.

All right, all right, let's all just calm down a little bit, shall we? :)~:-)~

Are we all calm?

w)

I said, are we all calm?

Okay.

Mr Respectamonkee, could you please explain what, precisely, you are doing? What equipment do you already have? What are you looking to acquire? What is the thought process that led you to ask about using an A11SR with active speakers? And how much are you looking to spend?

Respectamonkeee
07-10-2003, 05:31 PM
I take it you've not seen my help me spend 6K and make me stop dithering(not actual title) :D~:-D~

Been going over a few options as to which kit to put in my new AV room.hi end amp/processor's...active/passive speakers...usual stuff

ATM im leaning towards an active set up with a hi end processor of sorts....nothing set in stone as of yet

Have all the money sorted out but there's just a hurdle of what to buy :(

If i had a grand i'd know what to buy, but when spending this sorta cash im a bit nervous and want to make the right choice's as the wife wont let me do it again...least for a while.

Already got the dvd player and PJ so thats sorted....Sub im 99% sure on...unless i can find some one who wants to sell me a hgs15 or 18.

Karl,

did you get a price for the Blue Sky monitors in the end?

Respectamonkeee
07-10-2003, 10:30 PM
Yer seem about the same as the mackies or the dyn BM6a prices. For The Pro Desk system it retails for £825+ vat for the 2.1 system and £2095.00 + vat for the 5.1 system. The larger Sky System One monitors retail for £1095.00 + vat for the 2.1 system and £2595.00 + vat for the 5.1 system.

The sky one monitors are THX PM3 and have a 12" sub and the pro desk have a 8" sub. Both subs will hit 20hz im told!

Will give a full run down after i've had the demo

Mudge ur tag line....the streets? cant quite put my finger on it.....

The Irony of it all

Now I just have to find a dealer willing to sell the SAT 6.5s seperately, in one's and twos. :(

Okay, if, hypothetically, you were to do this, what would your processor budget be?

Hi Nic

Well if i diveded the money up into 3 groups....lets say

£1000 sub

£2.5-3 processor

£2.5-3 on speakers...bearing in mind i cant go over 6k

I'd realy like a decent processor so i wouldnt have to upgrade again...not bothered if 2nd hand...in some ways would prefer

so if u guys know of ne good stuff going for agood price , feel free to let me know

You should by now be aware of all the 568s Audio-T have ;)~;-)~.

Elliot (X3ELS) has a fully loaded 568.2mm in his shop for £3,444.

MC-1s are still available reconditioned for £1500.

Not much else really for 3K. Or rather, not much else I'd recommend. Best circa 3K bargain recently was Buns' Bryston SP1.7

Basically unless you need the extra inputs, it's pretty hard to beat the 568.2 :D~:-D~ especially if you want to feed your mains with balanced runs.

£2.5-3 processor

At that sort of level you're looking at:

<u>New</u>

Arcam AV8 (£3000)

Naim AV2 (£2200)

Track down Mr Daininthemix and see if he can get you a good deal on an imported Theta Casa Nova.

<u>Second Hand</u>

Dual-SHARC Tag AV32R

Get an older AV32R, and then get the dual-SHARC upgrade

Meridian 568.2

Bryston SP1.7

Parasound Halo C2 (which I've no personal experience of, but have heard fairly good things about)

It has to be said that none of these models come up second hand very often.

The other thing to say, though, is that I think you are dividing your budget wrongly. To do justice to something like a Bryston SP1.7 with active speakers you need to be looking at something like M&amp;K MPS2510Ps, which would be £4200 for the front three speakers alone. If you think you're going to be going in for a serious speaker upgrade in a couple of years, fine. But if £2500 is all you have to spend on 5 active speakers, then a processor of that calibre is (IMO) a waste of money. Sure, it will sound better than a cheaper processor, but it won't sound enough better to justify the price differential, because the speakers will be the primary influence on the sound quality.

Apologies to JD, completely forgot about his marvellous AV8.

Ex demo AV2 at Audio-T for about £1800 IIRC - serious bargain if you like the Naim sound.

BTW You can still get the Mackie HR624s for £800 ;)~;-)~

Thanks for the link Mudge...

What are peoples views on the Tag AV32r....im sure last yr b4 the dual sharc version this was seen as a decent processor..very hi end..

Now i rekon 1 of these would do me fine if i can find 1 for a decent price.

oh well i dont move in for another 2 weeks so im sure i can find something....just wish the cam belt hadnt snapped on the car yesterday as the wife was driving to work....sounds expensive :(

Mudge,

Was the Meridian &quot;fully loaded 568.2mm&quot; what I would have heard in the refrerence room at the EventII?

I must say this is the second time I've heard a Meridian digital active system and I have been really impressed both times. The previous time was about 8 years ago in a conservatory at Live 95 or something.

In comparison I found those Genelecs in the new large demo room really harsch with the 75 ohm digi coax and quite harsh with the Umbilical2 power cord on the source. I know I was way over to the left and it was probably pushing about reference -5dB or higher, but don't tink I could live with? I heard talk of 3K each or did my ears fail me then too???

cheers,

Rob.

861 with 800 linked with MHR I'm afraid in the high end room, 598+568.2 is very close to that but not as good. Depends on your room and speakers as to whether you'd notice.

3K a pair for the HT210s - I think they're very listenable, but I wouldn't pair them with TAG for instance.

The new demo room at the shop uses Genelec 1037a's across the front of the room. These cost £3300 each.

It should be noted that these speakers when measured are responding almost entirely flat. The harshness is the sound of an accurate speaker, don't get me wrong i am not saying you should like that, just that they are accurate.

What made me laugh was when we were calibrating and i was chatting to Steve (Genelec) he asked me if i wanted them to sound right or like Linn or Meridian
