View Full Version : THX important?

I'm new to the forum so be kind! This may seem like a bit of a newbie question but I'm in the market for a new amp and just wondered whether obtaining a THX certified amp was worth the extra money?
Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Welcome to AV Talk
I had the Pioneer 2011 and now the Pioneer AX5i which are both THX Select certified. Nobody (outside the industry) quite knows what the THX specifications are in order for amps to gain the certification but it was clear from a recent Hi Fi News head-to-head test of various AV amps that the Pioneer had less distortion and handled bass management better than other non-THX Select amps did.
It depends which price bracket you're looking at but if it's the mid-range, c.£800/£1000 area then I think it probably is worth going for the THX certified amp if you can.
That said, the Denon 3803 isn't THX but is a corker...

Tricky one this, i did go for the Pioneer 2011 over the non-THX 3803...but only because it sounded better _to me_ thru my speakers. Others, that i listened to the two amps with, preferred the 3803.
I don't find i use THX processing a great deal.
Higher up the market Ultra/Ultra2 things maybe different, but i'm not sure in the mid range i'd be overly swayed by the badge.
