View Full Version : SCART RGB+audio recommendation
19-11-2003, 08:41 PM
I recently upgraded the mains cable and the NTL digi to TIVO SCART lead both with good results.
I bought the entry-level IXOS 1.5m OFC gold plated lead for £17.49, only to make up an amazon.co.uk order to get free shipping for a present for my wife you understand!
It's surprisingly solid (IXOS, not the wife) with a relatively well moulded on SCART plug at each end, especially compared to the simple £20-30 scarts I was buying ten years ago and the gold plated one that came with my Sony 725 DVD.
As I daisy chain RGB on through my DVD player, I need 3 SCARTS for my TV in total, so am looking for recommendations for two more.
I don't mind spending sustantially more on the first one fron NTL digital to TIVO RGB in, as less noise=better compression quality AND less noise.
0.6m length would be fine for one and the best quality one needs to be about 0.8m minimum. I only need RGB 75ohm and analog audio one way pins at a minimum, shielding sounds good!
Anyone know of some decent group tests?
Your comments and expetience appreciated.

Here's what I dug up last night. In addition to the pre-requisite 75ohm coax construction, these 4 appear to also use metal fully shielded plugs which give a chance of a step-up from the good value IXOS First I already have:
Any comments or experience appreciated.
QED Sqart AV21 £42.99/1.0m sounds well made and well reviewed, althout I noted they were a big advertiser in the two mags that gave them awards so perhaps a slight bias?
Philex Thor - Won a What Fi-Fi award, again sounds really well made and great reative value at £17.99/1.5m
IXOS XHT601 £26.99/0.7m- not much mention of individual/audio cable internal screening?
Supra AV6 £69.99 - Looks to be quite expensive for my lounge kit and application.

Build quality is quite simply gorgeous: the gold-plated connections pins are beautifully made, and feel extremely solid - they plug straight into components like a hand into a glove.
What video best buy.
Possibly the best-made Scart cable on the market. Unlike the Ecosse Reference, it's fully wired and is thus compatible with S-video and RGB. The distinctive blue-coated cable differs from its rivals as the individual polyethylene-insulated sections contained within are optimised for the signals being carried. There's also an overall screen that helps to prevent the introduction of unwanted external noise.
At either end of the cable are the best Scart plugs we've seen. They have a robust and attractive diecast shell, and their pins and shields are all gold-plated. Performance is also of an exceptionally high standard.
Compared with a cheap bundled Scart cable, pictures from a high-quality RGB DVD source exhibit a welcome improvement in detail and noticeable reduction of noise. It may be expensive, but the AV2120 is definitely worth the outlay.
100% individually screened stereo channels in addition to overall

I use two types of scart lead in my systems and feel they are both very good performers.
I use a 3m Thor scart in my main system to connect my DVD player, I don't know about it's construction, but it has to run alongside a mains cable and the picture doesn't appear to pick up any obvious noise.
Our lounge system uses 2x1m Ixos 126AV scarts for VCR and Freeview. This has now been renamed as the XHT601 and I can vouch for it's performance.

I've ordered the Thor as it's a good price and their site's technical details look comprehensive, except no mention of return loss/m but then again how many SCART buyers worry about that? Pity it's 1.5m as I'd only need about 0.7m. I just had a hangup paying more for the IXOS XHT601 0.75m just to get less length!

I use the Supra AV6 from Sky+ to the TV and it's the best SCART I've ever used. Mine's RGB only though.
The Ecosse Armaggeddon is the second best SCART I've used.

Just cancelled my "Awaiting Stock" order with HiFibitz, of which I have a few now. This was because I happened to do a SCART test search on AVT and noticed that play.com sell them for £12 cheaper.

Philex Thor Scart to Scart arrived.
As per the reviews, it has solid shielded SCART connectors and slightly thicker cable than the £17.49 IXOS First I bought previously.
I'm temporarily borrowing the Silver terminated SupraLoRad power cable off the NTL box for my Laserdisc player, so have yet to do any critical viewing. It certainly looks and feels much better made for 50pence more! I can feel another will be on order soon from play.
