Hi and welcome to AVTALK
The answer to your first question is yes. All surroundamplifiers can be used for music, but the qulity will vary alot.
I have only heard good things about the Yamaha (never heard it myself though), but listen to the other brands aswell, Denon, Marantz, Pioneer, to mention a few.

hi, i have a 640se nad 541i cd player and harmon kardon dvd25. the amp is pretty good with stereo through the nad player and not too bad with the HK. I did have a rotel ra02 not long back but decided that i wanted to streamline everything, and even though the yam is not as good as the rotel, its more than adequate. The yam is quite a warm sounding amp compared to the rotel. i also did a demo with the denon 1804 and mar 5400.
in my opinion the yam was better for music and as good as the others fo HC, with denon sounding much too soft and the marantz was close but the diff in price over the yam swayed me to the yam.
