Back to work today after an Xmas break at my parents. I only get to see TV when I'm there.
I noticed a couple of things though on the TV, apart from the load of rubbish that was on, there were some films that had more content than their DVD equivalent?
I'd noticed this on Dumb and Dumber....where is the scene where they pick up all the Mexican hitch hikers?
And this year Stuart Little....Why does'nt the DVD have the piano scene amongst others...and yet it was shown on the TV?
I thought it worrked the other way round with TV cutting scenes?

I recall reading an article about how many versions there actually are of big studio film releases and it was scary.
Different versions for TV, for different times of TV showings, video, DVD, LD, different countries, airlines, aspect ratios, dubbed words etc. etc.
I think the article worked out there were something like 26 official studio versions of Terminator 2 in existence.

You do sometimes get extra scenes in TV versions of movies. This can be for a variety of reasons, but it's usually because some content has to be edited out for broadcast purposes and so they stick in some extra scenes by way of compensation. In this way, the flow of the movie isn't disrupted as much as it might be by the cuts, and so the movie doesn't end up being too short, e.g. 1 hr 20 mins instead of 1 hr 30 mins.
It would be nice if they included these TV scenes on the DVD releases, but you can't have everything I guess...

The most interesting ones are things like The Wrath of Khan where a very important scene is left out of the theatrical version then included in the TV version - mainly the fact that the dead kid Scotty drags to sickbay is his nephew - that bit made no sense originally.

My favourite 'TV extra moment' was the additional scene in the TV edit of Halloween where we learnt that Michael Myers' middle name is Aubrey. :D~:-D~

I watched the excellant Death and the Maiden R1 last night and noted that it too has a scene missing that was shown on tv. I was bemused and peed off as I recall it fitting in just right and adding to the harsh reality of the tale. :x~:-x~ :(

I had no idea there was a different version for television! That's absolutely ridiculous. The DVD version should be the complete version of the film uncut and uncensored in every respect. As for television if the film has to be cut then they are showing it too early! They should definitely include additional scenes used for the different versions as extras as there is always some space left on the DVDs, isn't there!
When I buy DVDs I expect to see the film uncut and not to have a version inferior to what's been on television. For instance commando I've only ever seen it on television, I think, and I seem to remember a scene near the end of the film where Arnold Schwarzenegger is trapped in a shed and during his escape one of the bad guys has the top of his head chopped off. On my region 2 release it seems to have been cut which is infuriating as it's one of the parts that I actually remember.
Is anyone familiar with Under Siege starring Steven Seagal? I seem to remember the film differently to my region 2 DVD... In the scene when Tommy Lee Jones and Erika Elienak are about to fly on to the battleship I seem to remember Jimi Hendrix's voodoo Chile playing in the background but not on my DVD... Is my memory playing tricks with me or is my DVD different to the film I originally seen?

I've seen the film but it was a long time ago and the only bit I can remember is a topless Eleniak jumping out of that cake
Music is another bone of contention unfortunately. I don't know about in this case, but they do sometimes change the music used for home video releases due to licensing issues. Examples:
The Breakfast Club and Weird Science were just recently released with the original theatrical music for the first time ever.
Wayne's World 1 & 2 contains some different music to the theatrical release basically due to problems licensing Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven.
The Dawson's Creek Season 1 and 2 DVD releases have had absolutely loads of the songs changed from those which were originally broadcast :(

problems licensing Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven.
Do you get the impression that Stairway to Heaven is either extremely expensive or extremely difficult to license? Have you seen the cut scene involving (well centred around) this song in Almost Famous? It's a classic  .

I don't know which but I'd guess both. I don't think those who hold the Led Zep licenses like their stuff being used in movies too much. Don't know why, maybe they think it will degrade the music?
I have Almost Famous and love the film but can't remember that scene. I didn't see it in the cinema though and didn't bother watching the original theatrical cut on the DVD either - only watched the bootleg cut. Did they change the music for the DVD then? :(

I've got the two disc R2 edition which claimed to be an HMV exclusive. It has the theatrical edition and the 'Untitled' cut on the second disk.
I can't remember which disk has it but there's a deleted scene where he plays Stairway for his mother to prove that rock isn't just noise. During the scene, which doesn't actually have the track on the soundtrack, there are big instructions in white overlayed on the screen saying things like 'Cue up your copy of LZIV now', 'Start the track NOW' so you can get the effect. (The scene is just over 8mins long. ;)~;-)~ )
I haven't managed to do this yet as my copy of LZIV is CD and my CD player is my DVD player... makes it a bit tricky :D~:-D~ !

I've got the R1 and I don't recall that at all :o~:-o~ Mind you, if it's a deleted scene, I may not have looked at all of them. Will have to investigate later :D~:-D~

You wouldn't think they would do that well at least I wouldn't. Before now I always thought the film was the film and the music wouldn't be changed from format to format. They should definitely provide warnings if changes have been made because you may remember a scene with a piece of music which made the scene unforgettable and the changes could ruin the whole film for you.

I agree. Sometimes they do put warnings. Wayne's World 1 & 2 have warnings on the cover that some music is different to the original theatrical release. So does Dawson's Creek.
