I'm buying a new television and stereo and wondered if it would be a good idea to connect them all together but I don't know the first thing about amps, is there an idiots guide?

I don't think there's necessarily an idiots guide, mainly because different people will understand different things and get confused by others.
But if you tell us what you know already, we can certainly fill in the blanks and clear up the grey areas

there will be alot of blanks!
I used to have a scart from my TV into the back of my stereo so that I can hear it through the speakers, I'd imagine that having an amp will give me a similar effect?

Can I jump on board here?
Ive got DVD & Sky+ into a Panny 6. Audio is currently handled by a Musical Fidelity A300 thru a pair of PMC FB1's.Its a simply awesome combination for Music, but its a bit OTT for watching the tele.
The sound / picture sync is a little annoying too (why is this variable by the way?)
I HATE the current crop of obtrusive AV speaker systems, tall stacks of cheap silver grey plastic. I don't need fancy features, just good quality sound.
I too would welcome any recommendations for amps and also speakers. These would ideally be the type I could conceal, not make a 'feature' of.
