While reading my monthly home theatre magazine I came across an advertisment for the new Yamaha receiver RX-Z9 which has 9.1 discrete channels of sound. What would be the configuration of the speakers for this Rx? :)~:-)~

I think it has two ekstra front speakers which is placed high, these are used for Yamahas endless DSP formats.
DSP wich is IMO not usable at all, I only use stereo or ordinary surround formats.

I've got the above amp. The extra two channels are for what Yamaha call front effect speakers (as mentioned above). magking
is correct in that it only works with the Yamaha DSP programs, which you can actually edit on the Z9 which means they are a bit more usable. But that said I don't bother with the front effect speakers or the DSP programs....
The amp is actually 9.2 as you can also drive two subs (Front & Back or Left & Right).
Any other questions, let me know.

are you using the p.scan feature on this and are all inputs upconverted to component output with p.s pal and ntsc.also do binding posts take banana plugs.cheers for your help

I am using the scaler to take a couple of S-Video feeds and up convert to component, which automatically gives your progressive scan. If you are using a DVD player which already has progressive scan you have to ensure you set it back to interlace. You can select various resolutions including 720p and 1080i. This is working for my SKY Box and my DVD recorder.
I am having a few problems with the scaler, but to be fair to Yamaha they are working on them and getting them sorted.
It's the usual story with Banana plugs, just remove the plastic tabs on the UK version.

Thanks to everybody for their replies but I still don't know the actual physical setup for this Rx. Is it 5 speakers at the front and 4 at the back? Surely this type of Rx is way ahead of anything that is presently available with most,if not all, DVD's sound formats are 5.1. Is there enough space on a DVD to have 9.1 channels of sound?

The two ekstra front speakers are the only thing separating this from a ordinary speaker setup. They will be placed high above the two front speakers AFAIK.
You will only get 6.1 from DVD. The two surround back speakers play a mono signal and the two ekstra front speakers play a signal made by Yamahs DSP processing.
