CES 2004: Denon Receivers
The Japanese audio specialists debut the 7.1 AVR-3805 and the upgraded AVR-5803.
January 09, 2004 - Denon, the Japanese audio/video component manufacturer best known for its acclaimed AVR line of receivers showed a number of new products at its CES booth.
At $1,200, the 7.1 AVR-3805 receiver (the successor to the AVR-3803) combines ultimate performance with a (relative to its performance) low price point.
Available in black and silver, the AVR-3805 provides seven built-in channels of amplification (120 watts per channel, 8 ohms, 20 -20kHz, <0.05% THD) with 7.1-channel surround decoding for all standard formats, including Dolby Digital Surround EX, DTS, DTS 96/24 5.1 for DVD-Video, DTS ES Discrete 6/1, ES Matrix 6.1 and Neo: 6 Cinema & Music modes, as well as the brand-new Dolby Pro Logic IIx (for cinema, music and games).
Using DPL2x, listeners can convert traditional stereo music, game and movie content into a room-filling 6.1- or 7.1-channel listening experience. The system also features Analog Devices SHARC 32-bit floating point DSP processing and Denon's proprietary advanced DDSC-D (Dynamic Discrete Surround Decoder-Digital) circuitry.
Another upgrade over the 3803, the AVR-3805 features auto set-up calibration, higher-performance DSP processors, and a Room EQ feature that makes it easier to match the output to any home theater or music listening environment. When enabled, the feature automatically analyzes and calibrates six settings: speaker connection, phase, size and frequency response. The AVR-3805 adjusts channel level and time delay and, through Room EQ, corrects frequency response with an 8-band parametric equalizer and adjusts to the optimum soundfield. The company also offers an optional calibration microphone for the setup feature.
Videophiles with multiple game consoles will still have to rely on an external switchbox solution. The AVR-3805 offers three component inputs -- enough for a DVD player, TV receiver and one console. Denon also included an RS232 serial port and the backwards compatible Denon Link 3, which enables access to high-resolution, multi-channel digital audio data directly from the Denon DVD-5900 and DVD-9000 DVD players.
Denon also showed off the upgrade to its flagship 7.1-channel THX Ultra2-certified AVR-5803. The system now includes Denon Link 3, Dolby Pro Logic IIx, HDCD, THX 4.0/5.1/6.1post processing, a Dolby Headphone output, plus many useful DSP modes. Instead of releasing a newly branded system, all production models currently shipping have been upgraded with these new features.

This might be because Denon don't want to release a bad EQ system
From AVS forum:
"As far as the acoustic eq goes, while it appears to be an added feature and has been available from Pioneer for over a year, it hasn't been the sales driving feature many thought. And there can be only one real reason for it. To do Acoustic Eq properly we know the microphone(s) are critical to the whole deal, and I wrote the (s) because to do it right you need a minimum of 3!
We are investigating Eq as a feature on upcoming products, but I have told Japan that if we can do it the proper way, meaning it actually does what it is supposed to do and doesn't adversely affect sound quality then we will ffer it, if we can't we won't.
Also I like the way Lexicon does Eq the best of bunch - check out the mic package they offer.
Regards,

And remembered that it's most effective at frequencies the DD-18 is very capable of dealing with

Funny, but most people on 'The other forum' think it is ugly. I don't care one way or the other for its looks - after all we only buy these things for what they sound like - right? images/smiley_icons/headphones.gif

It's callled the A1SR in Europe, though I think the 5803 has a radio and the 1SR doesn't, otherwise no differences.

Details of the EQ:
http://www.usa.denon.com/catalog/pdfs/Auto%20Setup_EQ.pdf
Have I read that right? You can store different EQ for each input mode, including pure direct? :o~:-o~
Madge
13-02-2004, 10:52 PM
I read it the same way, and that doesn't make any sense :?~:-?~:???:
The Denon's (certainly those with Auto Surround Mode) will remember what mode you use on a per input and per source signal basis e.g DVD Input - Digital Source - Dolby 5.1 & DVD Input - Analogue Source - PLII Cinema. So I would imagine it remembers the EQ setup for Dolby 5.1, another EQ setting for 5Ch/7Ch Stereo and so on. One thing to point out is that the Denon's class Dolby 5.1/DTS/Dolby PLII/DTS Neo as one mode.
Only thing I find strange is that you can EQ Direct & Pure Direct Modes. :?~:-?~:???: If I've read that flyer correctly.

That's weird mate. Hardly Pure/Direct after EQ is it?
Ok. Done some digging. You have the option to apply the EQ mode to Direct & Pure Direct Modes if you so wish, it's selected from the Main Setup Menu.
The EQ (MANUAL & AUTO options) can also be set to apply to ALL surround modes or individually assigned. When ALL is selected you can have different settings - OFF, NORMAL, FLAT, FRONT and MANUAL.
OFF is EQ Off.
NORMAL - Adjust the frequency response of all speakers suitable for a general surround system (Denon's words!).
FLAT - Adjusts all speakers to give a flat response.
FRONT - Adjusts all speakers to match the characteristics of the fronts.
MANUAL - Gives you the setting that you have manually setup.
The EQ seems pretty nifty as it sorts out Polarity, Distance, Frequency, Levels etc. 8)~8-)~

Not sure about that remote now. It looks nice, but I have a feeling that it's going to feel like that awful OneForAll I took back to Argos :(
Doesn't look like the 3805 will do bass management on the analogue 8-channel inputs either. I was hoping it would :(

Nope. Only the 5803/A1SR has that.

Don't forget to add on the cost of the Denon Mic too Muttley!
Seems worth it to me though, what with the gorgeous styling, better remote, HDCD processing, room EQ, Dolby DPLIIx, and more power.

images/smiley_icons/dito.gif , the EQ function is a boon. I've just got a Pioneer AX5i and the MCACC acoustic EQ function leads to much better tonal matching of my speakers!
Other high end features like Dual DAC's per channel (four each for PURE DIRECT), AL24 Processing on all channels etc are worth pointing out. The Dual DAC feature is something very rarely found even on high end processors, although the current 3803 & A1SR also have it.
I think the 3805 is going to be a bit of a barnstormer personally. 8)~8-)~
