View Full Version : pioneer vs denon

My name is Daniel and I am new to this forum. I am looking to buy a new reciever after having the denon 1602 for 8 months. I have a great set of Canton speakers and a pioneer 656a dvd. I have the feeling the the denon can't handle the preassure. I heard the pioneer 2011 which sounded great and looks like a million dollar reciever but as well liked the denon 3802 which has a much better price. Can someone help me with my choice. I would like to know what do you guys think about the pioneer reciever in stereo, dvd audio and home cinema.
Is it also true that while watching a movie it is not possible to play with the bass and the treble, in DTS, DOLBY AND THX?
Thanks a lot!

Welcome to the forum Daniel :)~:-)~
Hopefully I can help a little with your question as I previously used a Denon 2802 amp for home cinema duties and have recently moved up to the Pioneer 2011.
I actually like the sound of Denon receivers, they always sound warm and full to my ears. The 2802 ultimately is let down, IMO, by it's looks, the remote control and the nagging feeling that the 3802 (now 3803) would really be the one to raise the roof.
My only slight problem with Denon amps is that I prefer a very clear, precise sound - clinical almost - and I find that this isn't where Denon's priorities are focussed. That said, their amps seem very easy to listen to for long periods and don't attract attention to themselves, they allow you to absorb the sound very nicely.
The Pioneer is a slightly different animal. I find it gives the clarity and insight that I'm after and does an incredible job of effect steering. The 'placement' of sounds is stunning. I also feel that the auto-set up routine allows me to listen without always thinking I should be tweaking one setting or another. I guess it provides a level of confidence that things are right.
The amp itself looks gorgeous and although it's not exactly cheap, I think it performs way out of it's price range. The THX Select certification means you also have the option of THX processing, which I think maybe tames the clarity a little (not such a good thing as far as I'm concerned). The remote is also a gem :)~:-)~
As the two amps are virtually identical in terms of price, I don't think there's really much to choose between the Denon 3803 and the Pioneer 2011 other than personal preference of what kind of sound you like. I admit that the THX and auto set-up features of the Pioneer were what swayed my decision but, as with my Pioneer DVD player, I've finally found kit that I'm really happy with and don't constantly think about upgrading images/smiley_icons/icon_smug.gif
Let us know what you eventually choose and I'd also be interested to hear your views on the Canton speakers you have.
