As stated in another post, I've just got some cheap 5.1 speakers. I will be upgrading them eventually but wont want to rip the cable up when I do so I want to put good stuff down to start with. I'm still very new to all this so not sure what my optons are. I understand there is cable that can go under carpet. Sounds like a good idea also I'd like it not to stand out too much on the wall. (speakers are wall mounts.) Hope someone can help here.

For the record the longest run will be about 25'

Do you have a budget in mind? One 25 foot run indicates there may be quite a lot of speaker cable needed in total.

Also, it might not be a great idea using totally flat cables (Nordost etc.) over such long runs as they tend to be less well shielded and at that length can provide a very nasty load for some amp.

Well there would be 2 25ish foot runs of course - the rear set. The others would be relativly short. Maybe 2x6' and the centre a foot and a half I guess. Do the left an dright have to be the same length? A fair amount of cable I guess but no budget in mind until I get an idea of whats available. Bear in mind of course that its just my front room - I wont be charging. ;)~;-)~

Thanks for the flat cable tip. :( I was thinking of using that.

The word Nordost led me to a useful site. QED cable seems to pop up a lot too, any good? What is a terminated cable, do I need that? The speakers are the type that you just push the cable into a hole and snap a connecter shut.

So you're looking at around 55 feet in total. That works out to about 17 metres (that's how they price it, per metre).

If I were you, I'd get banana plugs for the amp end and use the bare wire terminals at the speaker end, it keeps the cost down a bit and will work fine.

I'd go for 18m, to allow for some extra, of JenTech Sky 2 4mm OFC speaker cable available here (http://www.supradirect.co.uk/shop/Speaker_Cable_zioff_the_reelzj.html) for only £1.79 p/m. As it's essentially the same cable Supra knock out for twice the price, it's a bargain and would be ideal for your requirements.

If you're handy with a soldering iron, it's best to solder banana plugs on the amp end. Richer Sounds do a pack of Gale solder ones for around £3.50/£4 a pair (of which you'll need 5 pairs) whilst if you don't fancy burning your fingers to ashened stumps, you could pick up some 4mm Milty grub screw banana plugs here (http://hificables.co.uk/acatalog/Cable_catalogue_Termination_options_8.html) for £3 a pair.

That should do the job nicely and come in at about £45 in total. There is no way you will get anything branded at that price and the above cable will be easily good enough for what you're after.

I've just invested in 50 meters of QED original to install under my carpet for 4 surround speakers (B&W 601's) good quality cable.
