View Full Version : Can I use a UPS for my Hi-Fi?
11-06-2004, 01:59 AM
this may be a stupid question but reading that a good clean power supply can improve the sound of a hi-fi system, can i connect a UPS normally used for computers to my hi-fi?
i've got a couple of old UPS (600va and a 1kva) that used to service my desktop computers and i thought they've done a great job of sending regulated and uninterrupted power. can't i use them for my CDP or amp?
any help would be appreciated...and please pardon me if i don't understand technical jargon...i'm quite a dunce on electronics.
You need to be sure that the UPS is outputting a true sine wave, many do not as this is a very very expensive way to operate. If it doesnt, then you will do damage.....

thanks. :)~:-)~ i checked the specs and it says "simulated sinewave".
and i checked other models' specs and sure enough, there are a couple with "pure sinewave" but they're HUGE (must be expensive).
ok, there goes that idea.

If you are in the £800 bracket you might be okay, avoid the cheap ones :)~:-)~
This is interesting, as work are just about to put two server (6 feed each) units. Made by Compaq so should be up to it.

If the item you're trying to supply uses a switched mode power supply then a regular PC UPS would be fine. I know of a few subs with digital amps that use switched mode.

i could not find any written spec on power requirements for my amp and cdp so i've already decided to shelf the idea. :?~:-?~:???:
anyway on impulse, i happened upon a little power conditioner on sale for $40....and bought it. It was a DIY unit and came with a return guarantee. Ok, the feature that sold me was it also had a surge protector.
Had been using it for the past week and must say, for $40, it worked well enough for me. i'm not very good at describing an audio experience but the thing is i can make out where the singer is (jheena 12 o'clock :o~:-o~ ). goes to show not all hi-fi stuff that works has to cost a bomb.
thanks for all the advise guys :)~:-)~
