On right now, setting up a blind test of some very expensive hifi.

Ok, here's what they did... they had a quick scoot round the Linn factory, showing the aluminium blocks being machined etc.
The test was a blind test on 3 'systems' for the one presenter to listen to.
1. 'Cheap' Linn hifi (about 2 grand) looked liked a classik with bookshelf speakers (not familiar with their silly names)
2. Live performance.
3. Ultimate Linn hifi. CD12, 8 klimax monoblocks, preamp and a pair of their biggest speakers (also probably with a silly name)
The music, a short piece of solo male vocals (folk) - this made the live performance easier as the bloke just kneeled down where the high was.
Well, the bloke guessed each one correctly. He said the ultimate hifi wasnt 60 times better (the cost difference), but if you want that last few percent of performance it was damn close to the live singer.
An ABX style test might have been interesting, to see how much of an intelligent guess it was. He seemed to pick the cheap hifi quite easily though.

Was the programme any good though Martin?

I have watched 2 programs and thought they were both good.

Yes i thought it was ok. Although it wasnt the best hifi test, it was pretty good for a tv program with limited time.

It was a rather mismatched test, at least with regards to the high end system, simply because the speakers are 'Quintwirable', and I'm pretty sure they 'quintamped' them with ten monoblocs, which bumped the cost up considerably. Thus it probably isn't the best reflection of the best hi-fi available for £100k.

AFAIk the Komri is the top model, and it is suitable four active quad-amping, which would point to 8 Klimax Solos as power.
As for best available for £100K that's eminently debateable. I can think of systems where the amplification alone is more expensive, and others where the amplification might be less than 10K :D~:-D~
