View Full Version : Alias - is it really *that* good?

I've never seen a single episode of this show, but it seems that many people are big fans of it, so I am curious about it.

However, I don't want to buy it on DVD if it's going to be something that is good to watch on TV every week, but not amazing... It's supposed to be a cross between Buffy and Bond, which is worrying as I don't really like either. However, from what I've read it sounds more like a spy version of 24, with lots of twists and cliffhangers, which sounds more like my cup of tea.

I can't help thinking that the coloured wigs on the front cover of Season 1 look really naff though - like this is going to be some cheesy teen show :?~:-?~:???:

I know Season 1 R2 is quite cheap at the moment, but I'd be going for the R1s due to the delays in the R2 season releases, so help me spend my money wisely please

personally i liked alias alot, who wouldn't want Jennifer Garner :P~:-P~

I dont see how the connection with buffy comes in, i've never seen the CIA track down vampire and deamons. Unless that is one of their special ops  I can however see the slight connection to bond, being a "spy show".

Ive never seen 24 myself but have heard it has, like you say, lots of twists and cliffhangers. Alias has quite afew of these too.

Thanks for the info. I couldn't find any mention of supernatural creatures in the synopses either

Is it well made and slick? Does it look like it would date really quickly? :)~:-)~

If the R1 is cheap you should get it give it a go  . There are lots of twists and turns in Alias and if you ain't seen S1 don't I mean <font size="3">don't</font> look at AJ's spoiler. S3 in my opinion had the most twists and turns which some did complain was too many but you can't get enough in my opinion :D~:-D~ .

I've only seen a handful of episodes and it's always looked a little bit cheap, plus there's no chemistry between Garner and her CIA handler.

I understand the Buffy connection, it did have a 'Teen Bond' feel to it. It was all a bit shiny and sparkly looking for my liking as well, I prefer my spy stuff a bit grittier.

That said I tuned out on 24 midway through season 2 because the plot twists were becoming ridiculous, I thought Jack might get abducted at any moment by the same aliens that bumped off JFK.

The only problem I ever had was that I know what I'm like if I have to stay awake for 24 hours straight, so given that Jack Bauer is supposed to be armed at all times, I could imagine him getting to hour 22 and just start popping caps in people who mildly irritate him. w)

I think Alias is *that* good - one of very few shows I make sure I watch. I got into it mid way through season 1 and think it keeps getting better all time with season 3 being a real rollercoaster of twists and turns.

I've got S1 &amp; S2 on DVD and will pick up S3 as soon as it's available.

but isn't there a plotline involving the CIA investigating Leonardo Da Vinci and some medieval prophecy that threatens to bring about the end of the world? It all seemed a little silly for a show that has one foot firmly planted in reality.

To be honest I never really saw Alias as having any foot in reality as they are worse than 24 in that they flew around the world all the time with what seems no regard to how long the flight would take and never getting jet lagged etc. Tarrentino liked it has he has stared in some episodes.

oooh trying to conmvince SG of spending money. thoguht that would never happen.

what I think of alias.

It is definately a suspense filled show.

there are twists all around. the actuion is good. Garner does some pretty good fighting and always looks nice in the costumes she has to wear (clue: ep 13 of S2  )

the stories are sometimes a bit too far fetched with supernatural parts seeming to take over. yet they don't really do but add a bit more to the misterious and suspense. I liekd thema lot. bought S1R1 for cheap and never regretted it. watched ait a few times as well and I believe that it holds up to repeat viewing (in the same way 2 does) as it gives you a different perspectives on the twists. It is NO 24 though. they are just too different. and the ere is a lot of spy stuff going ona with some noice (read ridiculous) technology gadgets. but the guy who presents them to her is a funny character that adds to the show.

I can't say too much about plots as it will spoil it, all I can say is that the end of S2 has me feeling well weird and you should watch it so you can tell me what you think.

get the R1 and see what you think.

Alias really is *that* good! w)

The first two seasons are excellent, the second season more so  but the third season was a complete let-down.

As was said in previous posts by other people the action is very good especially for TV and the stories are intertwined very well with strong story Arcs running through the series'.

I suppose I can see why they have compared it to Buffy but it's only because the leading lady kicks ass. As I'm sure you are aware SG Jennifer Garner is extremely hot and the vast array of disguises and revealing outfits certainly adds to the viewing pleasure.

Another extremely positive point is the DVDs are Dolby Digital 5.1.

It's very fun, it's very entertaining and just wait until you reach season 2! top notch

I personally only own season 1 on dvd at the present

With JJ Abrams at the helm of MI3 you can bet it'll have birds in not much in scenes. Let's hope it gets a 15 rating (unlikely - kaching) and the guy would let loose with the loose. His new show Lost is pretty good, going by the promo ep.

Still can't get over David Kronenberg starring in Alias.

It was a bit of a shock wasn't it! But then Tarantino has turned up a couple of times and I would bet he appears again in the future.

I managed to pick up a used R1 copy of Season 1 a while ago and have managed to watch 5 episodes the past couple of days. It's not bad, but nothing amazing so far. Alias and 24 are my favs at the moment, yes they are abit far fetched but I suppose if we wanted realism we would be watching the Discovery channel. The first 2 seasons of Alias were really good, great cliffhangers, interesting stories and Garner looking hot! I didn't like the 3rd season at first but when I got it on DVD and rewatched it,it got a bit better. So far the forth series is a bit disappointing, not much happening but I've read from the states it does get better.

24 is also a series I started watching from the beginning. I love this show as well.Yes you do start rolling your eyes at a few of the story lines in the first 3 seasons, it did feel like they were padding it out, but this season is excellent (though I was worried at episode 4 turning into a show about IT problems). The stunt work on 24 is excellent with gunfights, helicopter gunships and F/A 18 fighters (and we get excited about a car blowing up on Spooks!).

See if you can pick up Alias season 1 cheap, it is a solid set with some good extras.

its starts losing the &quot;ooohh&quot; effect a bit. and the fact that all their missions take less and less time to achieve is getting a bit on my nerves. They all seem rushed, but then I think they want to avoid getting stuck in details there and they try to develop the personal relationships a bit better.

the fact that i don't reallyfind time to watch them at the moment is also inhibiting my enjoyment of the series.

Other that that its still very enjoyable (when I finally get to see it) not as good as S1 and S2 but still good enough for me to watch it to the end and consider buying S4.

I agree there's a lot wrong with season 3 including and especially the points you mentioned and it only gets worse as the season goes along. Also considering the missions are shorter and less spectacular than previous seasons this should give more time for developing the characters, instead a lot of the episodes seem as if not a lot has really happened.

I have just finished watching Season 2 and am buzzing like mad! Absolutely f***ing amazing! A total mindf**k! :o~:-o~ images/smiley_icons/ooohyeah!.gif

I was hoping Season 2 would be as good as Season 1. I didn't expect it to be even better! images/smiley_icons/shocked.gif  Each time I think I've watched the best episode they could ever deliver, they smack you in the face with another one that's even better than that! How do they do it?

Great to see Terry O'Quinn having a regular role in this season, but what a host of top guest stars:

Rutger Hauer

Christian Slater

Ethan Hawke

Olivia D'Abo

:o~:-o~

First thing I did as soon as Season 2 had ended was come on line and order Season 3. How dare they leave me with an ending like that?!! :x~:-x~  I should've taken Tom's advice and ordered Seasons 2 and 3 at the same time :(

I didn't think 24 was great until after a few episodes. Also, if you drop into 24 in the middle of a season and catch only one episode and that's the only thing you've ever seen, it doesn't make much sense so can appear worse than it really is. Same with Alias. Plus if you caught one of the opening Season 1 episodes of Alias, you would have had the same reaction as I did - which as you can see from earlier on in this thread was basically, &quot;Hhhmm, this is alright but nothing special. What's all the fuss about?&quot;.

Alias Season 1 £17.99 at ChoicesDirect

The R2 of season 2 is available here locally and at a very good price.I could just drive down to the store and pick it up tomorrow.

My head says be patient and order the R1 online and it will be worth it in the end,my heart says break all speed limits tomorrow morning, enter the shop first thing, head home with season 2 and put feet up and press play.

You're not kidding, really enjoyed season one. We are now halfway through season two and it's just blowing us away. The four episodes we watched last night were just out of this world, didn't expect half of what went on, this season is just getting better and better.

I'm on the hunt for S3 now.

Prices are still high for this season, I don't really want to gamble and get it off ebay as there's so much crap on there, so, any of you guys now where there is a good priced boxset? :)~:-)~

BTW Tom, won't playing S3 before I get to the end of S2 spoil things? :D~:-D~

After many searches and hours of pondering I have decided to pay a little extra and get it from Loaded, I felt happier after reading various posts where members have not been happy with their supplier regarding lost discs and delivery times. Yeah that annoyed me as well at first because you can't help but notice it even when you go to order Season 2! After I'd seen the first few episodes of Season 2 though, I realised that it wasn't that big a deal. In retrospect, it's kinda obvious.

Just finished S4 and cain't wait for S5 on DVD to be released, this has to be one of the best shows on TV. I am now suffering withdrawal symtoms, Sydney please come back.

What the hell have they done to the theme tune? It was PERFECT how it was, why did they have to go and remix it :(

Jen's outfit in the opening of the first episode was HUBBA HUBBA :o~:-o~

TBH I love the new remix but especially like the new intro, so much so I have captured all Sydneys screen images.

I'm with SG on this one, I always skip the intro now (esp since they timed it so that a chapter skip will bring you right in after the credits are done.I think they try to hard to sell the show now using Jennifer. I much preferred the black screen with writing than all the pictures of her...

I bought Seasons 1 &amp; 2 based on this thread. I almost gave up on Season 1 but stuck with it since it apparently got better. Just finished it and was tempted to just sell an unopened Season 2 but thought I'd try it to see if it improved on Season 1 and have watched disc 1 so far.

All I can say is if you are willing to suspend belief for the majority of the action and don't mind a fairly formulaic, repetitive format then it's quite entertaining. The non mission storyline is actually quite good, it's when she does her stuff that I have to try not to laugh, and it's that that puts me off watching more. There are just too many 'that really wouldn't happen' moments for me, to the point that I feel insulted almost. I might try to finish Season 2 at some point though since the story looks like it might get interesting.

If I had seen Alias before Lost came out, knowing it was JJ Abrams, I might well have given it a miss. IMO it outclasses Alias by some way, it has a novelty and variety that Alias doesn't. Although there are obviously some mystical forces at work, it never gets too far fetched and is very absorbing. I watched Season 1 in only a few sittings, not something I can say about Alias.

If Season 5 is on par with Season 4 then I think they will have made the right decision since it will mean they've run out of ideas. You could already see that they had in Season 4. I don't like to see a show run into the ground and season after season produced just for the sake of it and for no other reason.

Just finished Season 1, having bought it (and Season 2 &amp; 3) a while back. Totally awesome, and it's every bit as good as people have suggested. I've no idea why people made serious comparisons to Buffy, since it's nothing like the show, except for the fact it has a hot lead with some nice moves - maybe that's the extent of the similarities :D~:-D~

It's very much a non-realtime 24, with elements of Bond thrown in for good measure. Perfectly cast, with not a dud in sight - the Tarantino episodes mentioned earlier in the thread were indeed great, and definitely amongst the highlights of the season. Whilst I think 24 has more 'Hollywood' moments and bigger thrills (and is probably the better show), Alias is definitely the better plotted show - no absurd sideplots, and it all comes together very nicely. They brought in elements from earlier shows, characters had meaning and purpose, and nothing was there to just fill up an episode, which is the impression you get with 24 sometimes.

Roll on Season 2 for sure

Just digging up this old thread. I've held off buying this for ages as I kept seeing reviews saying things like&quot; this is the best thing since Xena and Buffy&quot; neither of which I like. However, after a personal recommendation from Squirrel God I went and bought the 1-4 boxset from Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000BH7D7U/qid=1149513636/sr=2-3/ref=sr_2_11_3/203-0516028-3643148)

So, please bear in mind I've so far only managed to watch the first disc, this seems a very good show and my thought so far:

1: It's not a show that just shows Jennifer Garner waltzing about for boys to drool over.

2: There is a heavy plot element that takes some thinking through.

3: What is it like- So far, it reminds me a bit of James Bond, the original Mission Impossible with a bit of a Frederick Forsyth storyline.

4: Again, I've only seen the first disc, but I would say this has definate rewatch value.

there, just wanted to put all that down for anyone like me (and like SG was) who is still wavering.

Just finished Season 2. It's taking so long as I've been breaking it up with other box sets. I'm going to watch Monk 4 now before season 3.

Anyway...WOW! :o~:-o~ What a series.

I was amazed halfway through the show when <div class="dashed" style="padding: 3px;" align="center" width="100%">Reveal Spoiler (javascript://)<div align="left" id="373512670915412204" style="visibility: hidden;">SD6 was taken down. I thought this would be the major story arc for a long long time</div></div>.

It was great to see some more special guests too like Rutger Hauer, Ethan Hawke and Christian Slater. As for the final fight in the last episode. Good grief, what a fight! It reminded me of Bond's fight in From Russia With Love and also the fight Cusack has with Ackroyd in Grosse Point Blank.

And it all finished on an excellent note too with me wanting more.

A couple of silly things that grated slightly.

1: When they spent ages infiltrating a bank vault and then she escaped out of a window in the vault room?

2: How the baddies always seem to have plenty of time to escape even when they are surrounded by armed CIA officers.

Still, for this kind of show they're minor quibbles. I liked the gag reel on the disc too, it's good to see these guys playing such serious roles goofing off a little.

Finished with Season 2 today, and - like Season 1 - it got better and better as it went on. Like the others, I feared that

<div class="dashed" style="padding: 3px;" align="center" width="100%">Reveal Spoiler (javascript://)<div align="left" id="2115261418353368196" style="visibility: hidden;">SD6 being taken down halfway through would ruin the pacing, but it was fine. Can't believe that it looks as though the plot will continue in Season 3! How long are they going to keep this up?</div></div>

Overall, I felt Season 1 was a touch better, but this was still very close, and a highly enjoyable season. However, a comment on the finale:

<div class="dashed" style="padding: 3px;" align="center" width="100%">Reveal Spoiler (javascript://)<div align="left" id="21159667631614995712" style="visibility: hidden;">Er, what? I was loving it, and then suddenly it cuts to two years later *out of nowhere*. People both here and elsewhere seem to be calling it one of the best finales ever, but the cliffhanger seemed really contrived and pointless, to me. There was no foreboding, no indication anything was going to happen, no pick up of a plot thread from earlier. Was sat there, mouth agape, with a WTF? expression on my face - and not in a good way either. Kind of felt like a letdown for me, after everything that had happened before.</div></div>

Either way, should have listened to Tom and bought S3 at the same time. Goddamnit :(

It's a shame we can't get the bonus disc itself, I mean do they really expect me to buy the whole set even thoutgh I own Seasons 1-4. I think they should send me/us that bonus disc free of charge, because without those who bought Seasons 1-4 on DVD there might not have been a S5.

Season 5 is fairly rubbish so far, finding it hard to maintain an interest.

:o~:-o~

I'm liking 5 better than I did season 4.

Yup, me too. I just finished Season 5 today and I loved it.

After a great opening episode, it dipped below par a bit for 4 or 5 episodes (not bad episodes at all, but just not exceptional) then ..... BAM! In traditional Alias fashion, something happened that gave you an inkling that the show was about to hit gold again and sure enough, it did. The great thing was that they seemed to remember every characteristic that made Alias great and made sure Season 5 embodied it. There were some truly jaw dropping episodes that left me there going &quot;WOW WOW WOW!&quot;.

Overall, I'd rank S5 just behind S2 and S3 and above S1 and S4.

I can't stop saying &quot;wheels up&quot; at the moment

I really liked the last ever episode

I watched it thinking there were 19 episodes instead of 17 so wondered where they could possibly go from there .... then the message came up at the end, and I realise that that was my lot :(

But it was a fantastic episode and a pretty much perfect conclusion to the show.

I miss it already :(

EDIT - Forgot to mention Rachel Nichols. So hot. images/smiley_icons/wub.gif

I just watched all the five seasons over a week. Apart from needing a life and feeling totally disconnected from reality, I have to say that this IS the best tv series I've ever had the pleasure to watch.

Sure, they could have used maybe an episode or two more in the end so they wouldn't have had to rush a few storylines and they definitely could have used <div class="dashed" style="padding: 3px;" align="center" width="100%">Reveal Spoiler (javascript://)<div align="left" id="1845683886478665817" style="visibility: hidden;">Greg Grunberg in the final season - the series just wasn't the same with BOTH him and Vartan gone for most of the season.

In fact, now that I've watched the final season twice, I can pretty much live with all their other decisions apart from the way they killed Nadia (Mia Maestro) off 20 minutes after she was awakened from her coma. That particular episode was just screaming for Weiss (Grunberg)</div></div>

The most amazing thing watching the whole shebang in a row is to watch Jennifer Garner develop as an actress. The first season is painful to watch (as is the first half of the second one) when she is clearly worse than everybody else in the cast (Victor Garber, Ron Rifkin, Lena Olin, even Michael Vartan). The development between the first and fifth seasons is just stunning.

I have a hard time putting my feelings to words, I'm actually feeling sort of emotional right now  During my weekly marathon I was convinced that Jennifer Garner has earned all the roles she gets, but I was somewhat surprised to find that messrs Vartan and Grunberg have joined my favourite actors, as well. I'm looking forward to seeing more from all of them.

Can't say I really noticed Garner being a poor actress in Season 1. Seemed fine to me at the time

Agreed. Garner seems to have done a superb job right from day one. Looks like she could be on her way to becoming the top A list female actress too IMO.

I loved all the previous series but just cant bring myself to watch the final season. I have tried and watched a couple but it just doesn't pull me in like the others.

It seems unlikely - her consistently bad film choices are really hampering her, I think. She's appeared in very few films worth watching.

I like the look of The Knigdom, and the completely different Catch &amp; Release.

With regards to The Kingdom, I think there's a lot of credit to the character after Alias that another actress would'nt have.

I bought 13 Going On 30 at Filmnight for £2. A real bargain and also a great fun film.

She overdoes it a bit, IMHO. But then again, I subscribe to the Humphrey Bogart school of acting (&quot;think the right thoughts and the camera will pick it up&quot;).

Again, probably more a question of not being on par with her (superb and generally vastly more experienced) costars.

I'm gonna go with the line that most of the final season's problems are due to Vartan and Grunberg not being in for most of the time. The new guys don't manage to become interesting in the minimal time afforded to them - apart from Rachel Nichols who needs only that one bar shot with the neckline going on to be VERY interesting...

Just finished Season 3, and enjoyed it very much. It wasn't quite as good as the first two seasons, and I felt they overdid it with all the deus ex machinas and torture scenes (were they really any in the first couple of seasons? I think 24 was really starting to get into them when this season was being made, so maybe that influenced them), but it was very good nonetheless. Suspension of disbelief very much required, though.

The ending felt a bit anticlimactic really, as though it was just another (albeit excellent) episode. Had a look on the Season 3 wiki page for more info, and they seem to spoil the start of Season 4 on there, which I'm annoyed about. Still, I'll definitely be continuing, even though it's meant to be quite a big drop in quality.

7.6/10

Just finishing Disc 1 of S4, and the whole series so far has been OK. Not great IMO...

There are massive plot flaws scattered all the way through (unless I've missed something)...

<div class="dashed" style="padding: 3px;" align="center" width="100%">Reveal Spoiler (javascript://)<div align="left" id="6231854181601177286" style="visibility: hidden;">Jack's first inclination that Vaughn's wife was a mole in S3 was due to words she said on the phone that were identical to Sark's on the plane, yet when her father confessed and died the initial logic was disgarded. Not good, and inconsistent with the character.</div></div>

...to name but one.

Lots of things are important, and then never heard about again. Things that should be punishable by arrest go by ignored by the next episode. Too many &quot;72 hours earlier&quot; episodes (in my opinion).

That said, it's good fun to watch. Jack's dry wit is a big draw (&quot;it must have been lost in the post. Or it was an e-vite. I don't read e-vites&quot;). Marshall's delivery is top-notch. I'll still be watching, and will get the subsequent series.

I don't find Jennifer that attractive, and Melissa George's acting disability just left me sighing throughout with eyes rolling.

J J Abrams (sp?) is in posession of one helluva plot crowbar. I wouldn't be suprized if he manages to remake a popular musical and rename it Arvin Sloane Superstar.
