My first dip into home cinema led me to buy a Sony DAV S880, I only received it yesterday but first impressions are good.

But here is my problem.

The Sony has 2 aux phono input (sound and video). And one phono output and an S video output.

I would like to have my video plugged into one of the inputs and my cable box into the other of the inputs and use the S Video for DVDs.

On the Sony I can pick between DVD, Video 1 and Video 2.

Firstly can view the DVD channel through both the phono auxilliary out and the S Video out, so no problems there.

Secondly I can get the sound from the 2 aux sources playing through the amp.

BUT the problem is the video, I cant seem to get any video signal on the Video 1 and Video 2 channels, only on the DVD channel, and cant work out why. I havent yet tested whether i can play sound through the TV when on the video1/2 channels.

Does anyone have any ideas of what I can try??

Thanks

Matt

If you've got the 'monitor out' of the Sony via S-video you won't get the composite picture from the video1&2 inputs, just the DVD.

You need to make a standard composite (phono) video connection to your TV as well to view the composite signal from your VCR and cable box - the Sony won't convert them to S-video.

Sorry maybe I didnt explain properly, that is what I'm doing.

I am using the S Video only for DVD and want to put the other 2 aux inputs back out on the composite output but i'm not getting any picture through on Video 1 or 2 on the composite output but I can get DVD on both composite and S video which is what i would expect.

Err, well I'm stumped then - that's the situation on my DAVS300. Sorry Matt!

For info, what I want to do is detailed in this document.

actually looking at that diagram I should be using the monitor as the video out. Will try that when i get home.

That is what I was trying to suggest in a way Matt! The only prob with that is that you'll get DVD on crappy composite only. Can't you connect both? - composite monitor out to a regular input on you telly and s-video out to the s-video input. That should give you vcr/cable via composite and DVD via s-video.

I got it working now using the terminal video out for video 1 and 2 and using S Video for the DVD. Need to make sure i'm on the right AV channel on the telly when i'm watching a DVD.

There are still a composite video/audio out that appears to do nothing and i'm not sure what its meant to be doing. In the diagram on the sony website you can see the pins i'm talking about but they dont use them in that example.
