£300 plus VAT and postage though  Click on checkout, choose payment method and then it tells you the real price
Items in Cart: 1 x Sony PSP Value Pack with Ridge Racer (UK)
You are paying by Debit Card
Total Products Price: £ 299.89
VAT: £ 52.48 (17.5%)
Postage & Packing (24 hour special delivery) £ 6
Total Price: £ 358.37 ($ 673.73 - Euro 505.30)
If people were smart they'd wait four weeks and the Japanese prices will plummet. Then the US version will be released, and there probably won't be shortages so the import price will be low (under £170, IMO). Or wait until March and buy a UK version for about £160 where some retailers might even let you check for dead pixels (the JPN consoles have a lot of dead pixel problems and Sony will NOT replace them!) It's just not worth the kind of prices that it's selling for now, or was before Christmas (£500 just for the console!! :o~:-o~ )
It's a shame there's only a few decent games for it though but I still want one...I'd buy one now just for Ridge Racers and Lumines though w)
They do look class, it makes the DS look like a fisher price effort.
Im gonna hold off tho to see what the price is like and how much support it will get (not that this will be a problem).

Played with this thing yesterday and it is TOTAL class. The screen is so good the images appear Hi-Def like. Ridge Racers is breathtaking.
UK prices are going to be £180 for regular and probably £230 Value pack.
Jap prices you can pick up the value pack for £235 delivered all inc off yes-asia right now.
There are no differences in machines so if you really must have one now, I don't think you can get stung on the price. You will also beat the UK rush.
The one area of concern/benefit is the screen. Rumour has it the UK versions will be manufactured using cheaper Samsung panels. The Japs get the Sharp manufactured screens. Obviously comparison cannot be made right now, but the Sharp screen I guess will be superior. In the flesh it is stunning. However, 1st batches have been prone to dead pixels, dust ingress etc etc.
They were the 1st batch of 200,000 launched in Japan in December. Sony admitted to manufacturing problems. January see's another 500,000 put into circulation. I guess they have got the problems sorted now !
Personally I will go for a Jap model, giving it about another week or so to get the 2nd batches well into circulation. Supplies are really opening up right now, so silly price season has gone. £235 for the value pack inc delivery and taxes is good as it is.
One things for sure, this thing is a dead cert product, you WILL buy it.

Between 4-6 hours, depending on what's being used. Games that have a lot of disc access/lots of loading will use up the battery quicker though

Amazon UK are taking pre-orders at £180 for a launch date in late March. Quite disappointed with the typically uncompetitive price compared with Japan and the US, which are both targetting the £100 equivalent mark. I am also highly suspect that the UK March launch will occur, considering they are still sold out across all Tokyo, and that they are attempting a simultaneous US / European launch. Just can't see them having the inventory myself. I think a Summer UK launch would be more believeable, though I'll be pleased to be proved wrong.
Hopefully WipeOut Pure and Archer Maclean's Mercury will also make the UK launch, as only Ridge Racers interests me from the current games. GT4 PSP is the killer app for me, and I can't wait to see that...

Hi all. A couple of friends have picked up some PSPs and to be honest, when I first saw it running, I thought it was incredible. Really beautiful screen albeit with some faulty pixels.
To see one is to want one.
Watching the demo disc movie trailers, it is noticable that they don't have the quickest respose time (some blurring with motion) but Ridge racer was less apparent. However, even this and the high-lighted square button issue shouldn't stop Sony from confirming there place as the premier gaming hardware manufacturer.
Have now played several games (both standalone and wireless muti-player), viewed still images, video from the demo disc, compressed video from a memory stick and mp3 audio too. It really has the bases covered.
dvdsoon are now offering pre-orders on the units at a very attractive price!

with regard to how everyone is saying that this will walk all over nintendo's ds that would be a real pity; nintendo have not had much success with their previous two consoles and have repeatedly threatened to leave the hardware market entirely (in a similar way to sega) but seem to have continued due to their complete domination of the handheld market with the gameboy... this looks likely to change now :(

I think it all depends on the compression ratio, the size and quality of the image which will be displayed. These factors are all gonna affect the size of each file, but as per the second link some people have got the movie files down to 128mb per movie.
Now I have a IPAQ 3870 which I use to view movies on when I go abroad and have software which also downloads DVD's to either about 128mb(medium quality) or up to 512mb(best quality). This is the software company I use http://www.makayama.com/products.html. I also heard they may be bringing out a software version for the PSP and if it works anything like the one for the IPAQ it will be great.

23-02-2005, 07:28 PM
well I have an iRiver which can play avi files on a screen 228x176
compressed films take up about 300Mb but that isn't a problem with a 40Gb HDD
At most you would be looking at putting 1 episode of a comedy or something on the psp because I would imagine everyone would need all the space for mp3 files.
Does game data require space
1Gb is nowhere near enough space, a ridiculous decision by sony if they want an all singing and dancing games playing, mp3 playing, video jukebox.

The standard card is only 32mb(!) It's designed for use as a memory card for games/a few mp3s etc but not full-length movies
It can be removed and 512mb/1gb cards used instead. It's not designed for large files like this so that's why you won't get more than a few hours of film on a card.

I don't understand why they didn't put in an onboard standard 20Gb HDD
I think they did not add a large HD to it to stop it from being to big.
I know you don't have to use the memory card for any games, think when you save a game it is saved to internal memory.
I don't think i will use the PSP to play mp3's, for me it will be used to play games and if i go abroad maybe to watch movies. This will save me taking my iPaq along at the same time, i might copy a few songs i really like. But think my iPod does the job for music.
whatever
24-02-2005, 09:17 PM
i know that ipods can have card adapters to read memory sticks...what i wonder is if some bright spark will make them write to the sticks...that way you could buy one 1gb stick and take the ipod around with you, listen to mp3 and load on whatever movie you like onto the PSP...

It's a special disc format developed just for the PSP for games and movies. It's about the size of a minidisc and holds about 1.5Gb iirc.
It's nothing to do with DVD at all, it's just listed like that because it's a movie. I'd expect them to put some kind of warning on the site that it's not compatible with DVD though otherwise people are going to be confused :?~:-?~:???:

I picked up a PSP in Japan last week, really, really pleased with it so far. Battery life for me has been way better than the estimates I've been reading about online - I do tend to play it at low brightness and volume levels, but this has been perfectly acceptable. I've been consistently getting around 7 hrs gameplay/media viewing from each battery charge.
Games I have so far:
wipEout Pure - Easily the best of the series. My only possible complaint would be that it does not run at a fully true smooth 60fps (it's more like 25 to 30fps) but everything else about it is very well executed, and it's so much better than the horrendously ugly PS2 version.
Lumines - Truly excellent puzzle game from the man behind the (also excellent) REZ. Very different to other games of its type and graphically very stylish indeed, you have to see it in motion to appreciate how pretty it really is.
Space Invaders Pocket - Has all the official versions of Space Invaders made by Taito (5 distinctly different games and 4 more variations). The newest two, made in the 90's, have very nice graphics and gameplay which go well beyond from the overly simplistic play of the original.
Puyo Puyo Fever - A nice conversion, but pretty much the same as all the other versions around on the other consoles, really. Deceptively cute.
As to all the other media stuff...
I got a 1GB memory stick with it. Haven't bothered to load on any mp3's as my iPod does a much better job of that with higher quality formats of music files. Not interested in buying (m)any UMD movies as I've already bought all my favourite films several times over (VHS, LaserDisc and DVD) and I really don't want to spend more money on another, doubtless short-lived proprietary format. Have loaded on lots of photos though, and this is a great function, being able to browse through hundreds of images on that loverly screen. The image quality is great.
A great little toy.

I now have 3 different emulators working on my PSP for the last month. Now i can highly recommend it to those who are keen to play some old school games. I have a US PSP and so you need to make sure the emulator you will use is for the specific PSP. This is the first emulator i downloaded and works great KXploit (Homebrew on 1.50).
This is one of the websites i used to download and research the software. http://www.psp-hacks.com/psp-hacks.php I have also downloaded the background software which works great.
To research the emulator games by console i use the following website http://www.mobygames.com/home and then to download the actual games i use the following website [Removed by moderator]

What games does everyone else suggest?
You already have far and away the best two - Wipeout and Lumines.
As far as the other games I've played so far...
If you like Lumines and other puzzlers, Puyo Puyo Fever is good, it's more conventional though, but good wireless (if you can find anyone else who imports Jap games). Coded Arms is also good, it's a fairly simple FPS more like Doom or Quake in feel, run around and kill stuff and that's about it, but fun. Ridge Racer is a good version, very fast and smooth. And the golf game is great too.
There's a new version of Hudson's Star Soldier out today in Japan too, haven't played it of course, but love the old versions so I might have to get that. If it's any good I'll post again.

You already have far and away the best two - Wipeout and Lumines.
As far as the other games I've played so far...
If you like Lumines and other puzzlers, Puyo Puyo Fever is good, it's more conventional though, but good wireless (if you can find anyone else who imports Jap games). Just received Star Soldier today, and I'm happy to say that it's an excellent shooter.
It certainly won't be to everyone's tastes - a lot of gamers today will just see it as being far too retro. But for anyone looking for a pure and simple arcade-style rush, it's fantastic.
I was a little concerned about performance issues, as I'd heard the original Gamecube version had some very noticeable slowdown, but I haven't seen any here yet. Everything's fast and smooth - they've clearly put a lot of effort into the PSP conversion. (Well, as it's also the most expensive version of the game, I'd damn well hope so.)
Rotating the PSP to be held vertically also, surprisingly, isn't too much of an issue. It feels quite natural after just a few minutes play.
Lots of fun.

They seem to have found a way to trick the PSP in to thinking it has a higher firmware version! Which means people with old PSP's v1.50 running emulators will be able to buy games in Sept when using this... I've not tested it of course, but saves upgrading firmware on your PSP.
<table border="0" align="center" width="90%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td class="SmallText"> From psp-hacks.com</td></tr><tr><td class="quote">
Wab Version Changer v0.2 for PSP
Yoshihiro from Wab has released version 2 of the Wab version changer.
"This is described as the First Firmware Trick for Games that need Firmware 1.52 to run on your PSP and Cant Run UPDATER 1.52 or 2.0. The System thinks it's a PSP v1.52 ,v1.0 ,v2.0 even if its a v1.5 or 1.0.
Unrar the file and put the Folders into :
X:/PSP/GAMES/
Then follow the instructions on the screen
START : Quit without change
Square : Trick to Firm v1.0
Circle : Back to Firm v1.5
Cross : Trick to Firm v1.52
Triangle : Trick to Firmware v2.0
When is done you can go to System Settings > System Information and Check Your System Version :=) Then launch the game! Enjoy!!"
This will NOT work for people with firmware versions 1.52, 1.52, or 2.0. It's a homebrew application just like any other homebrew, so it will not work on versions greater than 1.5.
This allows 1.0 and 1.5 users to trick newer games that require update 1.51, 1.52 or 2.0 to run, into thinking your PSP is actually one of those versions, when it's really not.
DO NOT UPDATE YOUR FIRMWARE THINKING THIS WILL ALLOW YOU TO REVERT BACK TO 1.0 OR 1.5!

Buy it from Asda (seriously)
Unlike the games shops, they won't be pushing £300 bundles on you and crappy 3rd party accessories. And you'll probably be able to walk into any Asda and buy it there and then. No preorders, no deposits etc (cough Game cough :x~:-x~ )

Got mine yesterday and hooked the PSP up to my home wireless network - that bit was OK and it did the test connection OK. When I went to go online with the browser it gives me a DNS error!!! Will look into that at the weekend.
What I really want to do with it is when it is on the home network I want to browse folders on my network that have music and photos on rather than have to but them on a memory stick. ANyone know if this is possible/ how to do it????
Other than that the next step is to find software to get DVDs on to the PSP - there are several in shops - anyone tried any?

I've been trying to load some DVD footage onto my 1gb memory stick and am struggling :?~:-?~:???:
I've used dvdshrink to produce a compressed .VOB file and then tried to convert this to MP4 using MAX media manager (PSP software bought from HMV).
This seems to work OK and, when connected via usb, it appears to copy to the memory stick OK.
However, when I go into movies on the psp itself it does not seem to recognise the file and says "there are no movies" or something like that. The file is definitely there as it has taken space on the memory stick and I can see it when looking via windows explorer on the pc.
Do I need to format the card (1gb sandisk) first? Bizarrely after formatting the card, and creating the suite of folders (mp_root etc), the Max media software was telling me that I had no free space when I clearly had 949mb left!
Can anyone offer some pearls of wisdom?
Thanks
Geezer

Before you begin transferring video to your PSP, you'll need to set up the directory structure. In the root of your memory card, create a folder named "MP_ROOT", and then inside of that folder create another folder called "100MNV01" (both without the quotation marks).
Video files must be named M4VXXXXX.mp4, with the XXXXX part being the video number. For example, your first file could be M4V00001.mp4. You can number the files whatever you want, though every file must follow this convention, M4V followed by five numbers and ending with .mp4.
Then just save the video files in the 100MNV01 file

Sony's "LF-PK1 LocationFree."
It's a box that connects to your antenna, cable, or other A/V devices you have in your house, then your router. This enables you to serve up television, DVD, recorded TV programs, and other such audio/video signals (*cough* Playstation 3 *cough*) directly to devices connected to your wireless LAN.
What's more, though, is that Sony is offering a feature in this product called "NetAV". NetAV provides IP services to users of the LF-PK1 so they effectively have a fixed IP for just the LocationFree device. In other words, you can connect to your LocationFree box from anywhere in the world, provided you have an internet connection, and watch TV.
What does this all have to do with the PSP?
Let's take a look at the LocationFree's specifications:
-Integrated 802.11a/b/g LAN compatibility
-Integrated MPEG-4 encoder
Whoa, wait a minute there. Not only does the PSP have integrated 802.11b support, but it has integrated MPEG-4 decoding. Looking at the specifications alone, you can see that if Sony were to so desire, the PSP could easily be compatible with the LocationFree.
For the time being, the LocationFree box is compatible only with a Windows client. But what's the to stop Sony from releasing, say, a PSP client? Absolutely nothing -- since they're using an encyrption algorithm for the actual signal, they don't have to concern themselves with copyright violations and other such fair use issues that have been cropping up of late. However, the real question is: Will they?
We turn to some of what Mr. Satoru Maeda said during the LocationFree's announcement event:
"We plan to announce two more products that support LocationFree before the end of the year. I can't tell you what sort of products they'll be, but they'll probably surprise you." (source)
Alright, so PSP support may not "surprise" me, but it would certainly be a welcome addition.
Furthermore, when asked about PSP support for LocationFree, Mr. Maeda responded:
"It's technically possible." (source)
Still, that doesn't really answer our question, does it? Will Sony release a LocationFree client for the PSP?
The way I see it, absolutely. Back in January of 2005 at CES, Sony actually stated that they were developing a piece of software called "LocationFree Player for PSP." (source) The format it uses? You guessed it -- 320 x 240 MPEG-4 video.
Therefore, my prediction for this Speculation Time: Sony will announce LocationFree support for the PSP at this year's Tokyo Game Show.
Taken from http://www.psp-vault.com/Article290.psp and i must say it sounds like great news if it does happen. You could connect to it from anywhere in the house and watch a movie on your PSP in bed before you fall asleep... Now i know you are already able to watch movies on the PSP, but not what is on TV at the moment and only what has been stored on the memory stick.

Thanks for the help, Geezer. I have created the file with the 5 digits but have not added to that the ".MP4" bit - do I need to do that - I'd assumed because it was an mp4 file the file type would automatically be in the name.
Any ideas why, after formatting the memory stick (which creates the suite of folders you referred to, including "mp_root")the maxmedia software "reads" the memory stick as having no free space (and therefore prevents copying to the memory stick) whereas if I delete the suite of folders it "reads" the memory stick as having the right amount of free space, 949mb.
It was never going to be easy............ :?~:-?~:???:

Sav,
Using standard explorer drag & drop works, thanks for the tip.
The problem seems to be at the psp / memory stick end because even though the correctly named file and directories are on the memory stick (visible when looking at the usb drive through windows explorer) the psp still says "There are no movies" when looking at the card in the movies menu.
Also the psp recognises a file on the memory stick because the free space of 940mb is 9mb less than full capacity, ie the size ofthe file in question.
Faulty card?

The screen quality is amazing  Now you just need to rip some DVDs to a memory stick and you'll never need a portable DVD player again
I was sceptical but I have to admit that UMDs do look very impressive on it. There's no way I'd buy them, but they do look very good.

I am using mine extensivly - just been on holiday - watched 3 films (loaded on a 1Gb card), listend to several new albums on MP3 on another 1Gb card and played lots of games.
Came home on Friday - downloaded 300 odd digital photos and uploaded them to the memory card and took them around to my parents to look at.
All on one bit of kit   :D~:-D~
Got to get a new set of headphones though as the standard ones are rubbish w) Anyone replaced their's yet? If so what have you bought and are they any good?

Got one of these in the duty free on the way back from Spain, works a treat!
Only have 1 game on it (Burnout Legends) and no other accessories (aside a USB cable), so need to know what to do. Just found out on the off-chance that my PS2 can charge it up over USB

Get across to the classifieds and pick up a couple of games. ;)~;-)~
My son has one and already he has 2 x 1 Gig cards, downloaded so much on it, has all the emulators you can think of, even a pc emulator. I've been playing Sonic, Mario Kart, R-Type etc, they're great fun, favorite psp game is Everybody's Golf, it's wicked.
Wow, the new PSP can really do all that!
If a games console can be that versatile then, i might go back to them.Being only a handheld console, i did'nt think they'd be able to do that much, but there you go.
Mind you i dont go anywhere much, so a handheld would probably be unnessessary for me.
What would be cool is if you could get on the internet with them, maybe they do, after all, i have'nt delved too far into thier cababilities yet.

Version 2ish onwards of the firmware has an internet browser. If you've got a wireless network then once configured it'll connect to the web no problem. Quite clever to with it's reformatting, but not quite there yet with the ease of browsing. Still very good.

If you either have a 1.5v firmware or downgrade a 2.0v you can install snes, gba etc emulators which are a lot of fun.
If you legally back-up your own games onto memory card and run them using umd emulator you can run games such as winning eleven 9 at 333mhz instead of the much slower setting, and the games load incredible fast, there is no slow down, and battery life increases a massive amount as the battery hungry umd drive isnt being used!

With the lastest firmware, this is now implemented on the PSP, although I have not seen anywhere yet advertising the hardware.
I'm of a mixed opinion on this one. On the one hand it's great to be able to stream your media to your PSP, but on the other you have to buy in to yet another bit of Sony hardware - it's a shame it can't be done using a HTPC, or a PC with DVD backups on. After all, you're all ready using UMD discs, or ripping to a memory stick (which has just cost me twice as much as an SD card that I've all ready got). OK, the hardware would be simpler, but it would be nice to have more than one option.

Did you get this sorted Savage? I've downloaded a couple of video files that thrash the display and unblock stuck on pixels. I had a white one stuck and after a few run throughs it fixed it.

I tried this when i had a US version left it going over night. Made no differnce at all. Still PSP less until Sony get more stock.
I got a few quid for my birthday and am seriously considering spending it on a PSP.
Can someone talk me into it please?
Also what essential extras will I need and what are the "top" games on it so far? I love racing games and sports sims, but will play most genres.
I dont have a dvd burner so I guess I`ll have to buy UMDs if I want to watch a film?

I had my first look at a PSP last night, the screen quality is nothing short of breathtaking. Without a doubt the best screen I've seen on anything similar and portable.

Its on my christmas list mate along with Ridge Racer
I still havent unpacked it yet.I spent last night trying rip some dvds to my laptop bt with no success. My laptop is having lotsof glitches at the moment, media player wont work,Outlook express wont work and the dvds wont rip to the hard drive.I`ll give it another go over the weekend.
In the meantime I`m looking forward to having a go on Tiger Woods.
As for Need For Speed, well I`m not expecting too much from it.
  I managed to load an epsiode of The Simpsons onto the PSP.The picture quality is amazing although I need to learn to compress it a bit more as the one episode is taking up around a quarter of the 1 GB memory.
I used dvd shrink and PSP video 9 which were both quite straight forward to use.
PSP video 9 was quite slow in converting the file - around 25 minutes which is probably the run time of the episode. Is that the normal conversion time we are looking at?

Adox use http://www.downloadatoz.com/psp-movie-creator/Very easy to use easily the best i have tried.
Over here the PSP was pretty easy to get hold of, had it for a few weeks now. Got Ridge Racer and it's pretty addictive once you get into it and start unlocking faster cars and more tracks. Star Wars Battlefront II on the other hand is a pig to control and quite frustrating at times. Also got GTA but haven't played it yet. One thing about the PSP is the sound via Headphones is supposed to be limited to a max 90db. If that's 90db then I'm either deaf or the PSP is borked. Tried some Koss Headphones and whilst the quality is better the overall volume isn't. Anyway, the actual console is pretty nifty. 8)~8-)~

Jase, theres a volume limiter in the sound settigs that you might have activated. You can choose to turn it off if it is set to on.
The Sony in ear phones that come with the PSP are posibly the worst phones I have ever used.At max volume I could still hear the tv in the background over the volume of the PSP.
Once I connected my PX100s it was like light and day.The volume increased by multiples as did the quality.I`m as deaf as they come, especially when listening to music, and I`d say that the volume on the PSP is around the same as my ipod which has the volume limiter lifted on it also.

I'll doublecheck but I'm pretty sure the limiter is off. The IPod I had a listen to was way louder so there must be something daft I'm missing.

The USB Connection to a PC is all you need to copy files across. Replace the headphones with others that have been quoted on this thread.

Downloaded new firmware upgrade 2.71 yesterday. Only two things mentioned in the upgrade - the ability to download game demos straight from the Internet Browser, and something about a fix for viewing external sources with the LocationFree player.
