I joined yesterday, brand new to this and would like any information on a home cinema set-up.I have a Panasonic t.v. and dvd recorder and thought that I would purchase the panasonic SAXR25 to have compatibility, but unsure if this is the right way to go,if it does seem o.k.what would the best speaker option be.My living space is quite small,so small speakers are required.

Thankyou for any advice

Terry

Welcome to AV Talk Terry

Although buying a Panasonic amp will probably make your system look more compatible, with amplification you can pretty much mix and match whatever you want as far as brands go.

I guess the SAXR25 is about £300 or so? For that price you should probably consider:

Marantz SR5300 (c£240)

Yamaha DSPAX630 (c£250)

Denon 2802 (c£299)

I've not heard the Panny amp but I'm fairly confident all of the above would perform better overall.

What's the ballpark budget you have available for the speaker purchase? That'd assist us in coming up with some ideas :)~:-)~

Hello Juboy, thanks for the reply,I am so new at this message caper that I am not sure this is going to work.Budget wise I am looking at £300-£400.It is a mine field out there looking at different amps, and all the makers tell you their product is the best.(only natural).

It can be a bit of a minefield, although the amps I've listed above have all been well reviewed and have many supporters among their owners on the forum.

I used to use a Denon 2802 and it really is a great piece of kit - and a complete giveaway at £299. You really can't go wrong with that amp.

What budget have you set for your speakers?

Hello Jonas.Being a complete novice, thought I could pick up decent speakers for around £150,wrong again!!!! they are also part of the mine field out there. They need to be small and hang on the wall, and his Masters voice say they have to be silver,I guess she thinks they will match my hair.So am now thinking I will have to spend around £300. :(

One thing that is guranteed when it comes to home cinema is that budget always creep upwards..... I don't know any small/silver/wall mounted speaker packages for that budget, but others might!

The Kef eggs (old versions) with a sub are around 500 for the full set. Great looking speakers, your wife would love them, but not the price! (New versions are 800).

Seen the Mission Cinema 72 pack for 249, used to have the Mission M7DS surrounds which I was very pleased with.

There i also the Mission FS1AV set for 399, but I really don't know anything about these.

Also don't forget to allow some budget for speaker cables as well.

With regards to speakers,I have had a look at Denon SC-50 HTB,they are around £220,will keep looking.

When I look through some of the messages on the AV site and the prices that people pay,I think I must be an invader from a third world country. Then again, have to join the system at some point.

Welcome Terry, and beware. This AV game carries a dangerous bug, upgraditis. Some of the victims have started a self help group in General Chat section, a thread titled "Home Cinema A step by step guide".

 Hi Juboy and everyone else thanks for the advice given to me,I ended up getting a Yamaha RX V540RDS,one of the reasons was the fact that a set of Yamaha speakers and cable came free? with the receiver, making the total cost including the optical cable £399.The speakers will not be the choice of the majority but they are small, silver and sound comes from them, later on when the AV bug really kicks in no doubt I shall be looking to upgrade.

cheers

Terry

Not heard it myself, but it seems to have picked up loads of glowing reviews. I doubt there's any question it's a better amp than the Panasonic.

Only thing is, it deserves a nice speaker system to really make it sing... start saving  :D~:-D~
