help with sony amp + yamaha spkrs

Hi, I'm new to the site but could really use some help. I have a sony receiver - it's a STR - DB780 with dts dolby etc, and have just got a fairly basic set of Yamaha surrounds - 201's I believe. My problem is that the subwoofer will not work and neither will the centre surround speaker. It's not the speakers cos I've tried two different sets. There are so many functions on the amp that I'm probably just missing something! - sadly I don't have the instructions - so I'm a bit stuck.

Any help would be really realy appreciated.

I would guess that you need to go into the onscreen setup menu and tell the receiver that you have got a surround centre & sub. By default these are probably set to not being connected.



On the remote you should have a button marked as OSD, menu, setup or something similar. This should bring up a menu on the TV screen and you are looking for something like 'speaker setup'. Once in the menu it should be fairly easy to follow and get the receiver setup to you specs.

One thing to be careful of is that some receivers will only display the menu if connected to TV via composite (& often S-Video), so you might need to connect another screen (portable TV in my case)via a composite cable.

Hopefully somebody with the STR-DB780 will be able to confirm/correct the above.
